His passion that I now see hopefully is a bonus.
Guys like him, Hextall like, can let their emotions affect them in a negative way once the snowball starts down that hill.
But, in my experience of playing the position, I like Lehner's passion.
IMO, goalies always need to be the strangest dude in the room and....they usually are. - BuffaloHardHat
Lol valid point. Another great thing about lehners recent game in the timing of saves. Johnson had some solid numbers but letting in goals late in periods or right after you teams scores can be a dagger
ya know, for someone who was a big Reinhart supporter at the beginning of the season, I'm kind of surprised you wouldn't give Lehner a chance.
Not saying he's bad. Not saying he's good. But he deserved a chance.. and still does.. to prove himself to be an effective starting goalie. - TheSabresTaco
I thought Murray overpaid for him, and when I saw him out of shape, all I could think about was the old core

no matter how well Johnson plays, he'll never be considered a starter because of this. There's always the bad rebound, the bad, untimely goal. Always.

It wasn't promising, but it was frustrating for some of us, myself included, that some folks put their hate goggles on and saw the bad and in along the same language thought Murray was an idiot.
I'm of the impression Murray knows a (frank)ton more than we do. In saying that, I tried to place myself in his shoes, see what he saw. And what I saw was
A young and very talented 24 year old former 2nd round pick who can grow and develop with this team.
A goalie who helped win a Calder Cup.
A goalie who in his very young career has performed very well at times (and bad at others)
A goalie who is extremely intense and has been working heavily on handling his temperament.
Overall it's becoming very apparent that Murray can spot talent. He's had his eye on Lehner for a long time, and for the price of a late 1st round pick, this guy could really, ideally round out his game and become a starter for the Sabres for the next ten years.
I commend TM for being aggressive and trying to land special pieces here and there. If Lehner puts up better numbers over an 8 year span than Miller did, I will pay a late 1st round pick every single day. Just don't tell gerbadoo.
Said it since day 1, give the kid a (frank)ing chance. Let's get a larger sample and see how this plays out. Let's see how he performs when he's at his best. - TheSabresTaco
Reactions around here are often the equivalent of READY, FIRE, AIM. Unfortunately, it's often the "loudest" and some of the most frequent posters who shoot first, and often, and then think (to the extent they can).

Also we picked up that other guy that is mentoring the Rookies....
But that's never mentioned in the price because Murray was fleeced by his uncle or he was doing his uncle a favor and is tearing this organization apart from the insides.... CONSPIRACY!!h!euqig!!!!
Edit: He's an Ottawa spy. - jochfr
I think it's a little of both in the Lehner trade. He wanted Lehner and as we saw with Kane and RoR when Murray wants a player he's seems to get obsessed and is willing to pay whatever it takes. I also think he could have negotiated pick #31 for Lehner but just gave his uncle #21 as a thank you for giving him his start in his career.

It was said that Ottawa told him they had a better offer for him, so either they had to give up the 1st or they were trading him elsewhere.
Bryan Murray came right out and said he really DID NOT want to trade Lehner within the Conference, let alone within the division. Those types of things drive the cost up.

In all honesty, I don't think TM doesn't have an ounce of bullpoop in his body. He wants to build a great team and succeed. I doubt he'd ever just be like..
yo.. I know the cost is 31, but here's 21 because you're my uncs. much love.
Also read some text along the lines of "that was the price to win the bid". More than one team was likely in on Lehner, and if you want a guy, sometimes you gotta pay up a few bucks.

It does sound like some people here are starting to kick the tires on a possible playoff run. With 31 games left, it's definitely not impossible, and would be really nice to see this team build some solid chemistry and go a tear. I'm just afraid of the dreaded race to 9th place and picking a guy who will be 2-3 years away instead of one of the ready now guys at the top of the draft. What does everyone else say, do you want to see the team put together a playoff run or stay the course with the tank?

I don't think he ever just handed over #21, but I'm not sure just how much back and forth went into the negotiation either. Maybe, the price was firm, but with Ottawa having 3 solid goalies and most of the other available goalies having already been moved. I don't think Ottawa had much of a market left to deal Lehner from a position of strength.
