fair enough ... and I'd also add that it's possible it wasn't a punch, but an elbow.

I looked at the replay 50 times, and I can't tell if perhaps Simmonds actually got him with an elbow, which is what the ref might have thought.

edit: definitely a punch, but it landed squarely.

Not only are the refs calling phantom match penalties but they apparently arent going to call other obvious infractions like that.

After watching the replay I see Simmonds take a late run at McD. Slash him. Try and take another shot at him (when McD gets his stick up) then punches him. Explain how that's 2 each?

Yes they were saying he should have gotten the match penalty for the cross check and not for a dive. Which was a ridiculous call.

I think Simmonds repeated attempts to get after McD on that play that culminated in the punch to the face made the decision for them.

Simmonds takes a late run at McD... then keeps going at him making McD to put up his stick to defend himself (sure its a cross check but hes trying to defend himself)... then Simmonds takes a slash at McD... and finishs it off with a cheap shot punch.

You want to tell me Simmonds isnt trying to take the Rangers best skater out of the game?

Im sure the ref is thinking, Im nipping this in the bud right away and Im not letting this game get out of control.
