It was unnecessary given the game circumstances. I agree. One thing I detest in the new game is thy ever single big hit ends in a fight (this was not a good example as it was marginal) but every single time there is a big hit there's a fight. I hate it. I'd love to see a new rule that if someone gets jumped in a situation like that that even if the player defends himself the initiator gets tossed. That would stop it maybe. - Hextall271
I agree...any big hit that is clean results in a fight because apparently youre just a giant vagina if you dont stand up for your teammate |

Late to the party but I didnt think the hit was illegal I just thought it was very unnecessary. He had time to lay the check without trying to put him into last week - YuenglingJagr
This is a very good way of putting it. And in response the refs put us down a man for 5 min. For that alone, I'd call him onto the mat and yell at him to smarten up... |

NBA moving towards advertising on jerseys.

The NHL is doomed.
Side note: It seems the NHL hasn't cornered the market on ugly all-star game uniforms.

I think I know the answer to this, but if they put the advertising on players jerseys if joe fan buys one, it'll have it as well right? If they look like the euro jerseys count me out. I won't buy any more. They're hideous and you look like a walking billboard.

Can I ask why everyone feels that just because it is 5-1 that Gudas shouldn't have hit him?
If Weal was motoring down the ice would Bogosian not him because it is 5-1?
I hate the idea that one team has to lessen their play because the other team is trailing.

Isn't the guy 5'9''?
So for him to crunch down a little makes him even more prone.
Just watched the hit again and I think Gudas comes off the bench and takes two steps as the play comes to him. - J35Bacher
The key to me is Catenacci trying to make a play on the puck still. Why should a player trying to retain possession of a puck be afforded special protection just because he's crouched, on one knee, prone, etc.? He's fair game so long as it's not going to be boarding. |

I am not sure if everyone feels that way. I think he should have let up because he had plenty of time to realize the guy was in a vulnerable position.
Remember how pissed everyone was when Briere got decked against the Pens? |

I'm not peeved that Gudas threw the hit. I'm peeved that he attempted to hurt him doing it. In my opinion, he had enough time to target a different area than the head. |

See I wasn't.
There is one place on the ice you always need your head on a swivel and that is through the center of the ice in the neutral zone.
These are pro players.
Just like Pro NFL QB's always know where certain linebackers are that blitz and hit, hockey players always know when certain guys are on the ice.
When watching the hit the play comes through the neutral zone and the Buffalo player and Vandevelde are fighting for the puck. Gudas changes off the bench as play is coming right to him. He takes two steps and the puck bounces away from the player and the buffalo player is still looking for the puck.

I cant cut and paste articles but panacio said he expects a suspension to gudas on that hit. I just dotn see what he did wrong. Was it late and unneeded yes but its not suspendable. Look at the rinaldo hit on coots. I would be shocked if he gets suspended |

Well he doesn't have a hearing so the NHL didn't think he targeted the head.

It's because players simply have no respect for each other anymore. As "violent" as the 70's and early 80's were, players did not intentionally try and head shot each other. And if they did, they got their ass kicked and their teammates would often just stand and watch.
I guess if the league would start handing out real punishments to repeat offenders, such as full season suspensions, maybe this kind of crap would stop. However, the blame still lies 100% on the players.
