Tank on!!!!
"La Presse reported Friday that Carey Price has a torn medial collateral ligament in his right knee and will miss the rest of the season. Coach Michel Therrien called the report "speculation" and said the Montreal Canadiens star goalie is working hard to return to action." |

Can anyone explain this style of contract to me? I just don't understand it. Is it that the Sabres are on the hook for the signing bonus in the last year of his contract but then could trade him (if he permits) to another team that only has to pay the balance of his $1M salary? Because it's still a 7.5M cap hit, right?
I just don't understand what the benefit is. - seedy
Its buyout proof, No matter what he would be collecting his bonuses for the full amount. Bonuses are paid on July 1st no matter what.
His contract goes to 2022-23, CBA goes up to 2021-22. So the danger with a bonus heavy contract like that for teams, if the CBA is nullified earlier or is a work stoppage, ROR is getting his money no matter what |

This was bound to happen, his name was being talked about less and less. Ullmark has jumped him to back up Lehner next year. And, other goalies in the system are not far from making the jump to Rochester. Move him now for whatever we can get.

The cap hit is always the same, every year, regardless of how the real $$$ is paid out
What it does do is give O'Reilly a bunch of $$$ up front, which is nice for him
It also makes him more desirable should we trade him down the line, bc even though his cap # is the same, what the new team would actually have to pay him would be less
It's also desirable for a team that has a payroll cutoff but still needs to reach the cap floor

Got it. So, an incentive for him because it's money in the bank and if the Sabres need to buy him out for some reason, it's only a part of $1M that counts against the cap?
Or is it still a part of $7.5M?

bonus money counts, so even if you were trying to buy him out with 1 year left, its 6.8m cap hit. Teams save nothing buying him out.
Its a smart deal for him, basically locks him in to getting his money no matter what happens to him or with the CBA, sabres take on more risk in the later years, especially since its extends beyond the current CBA |

Yeah, I read jdfitz77's reply after responding to yours.
So basically, it was all to entice/benefit O'Rilley….which is really unfortunate now that he's a bust.

The way the CBA is, u can't really do anything to mess with the Cap now
Can't even "bury" players anymore in AHL. All but 900k of their cap hit would still count
It was rewritten to plug up all the holes that teams were previously taking advantage of |

Conversation stems from A while back i posted to structure a Stamkos contract as such: 7/68.32
1 - $12MM (11MM Bonus 1MM base salary)
2 - $12MM (10MM Bonus 2MM base salary)
3 - $10.8MM ( 9MM bonus 1.8MM salary)
4 - $9.72MM (8MM bonus 1.72MM salary)
5 - $8.75MM (7MM Bonus 1.75MM salary)
6 - $7.9MM (6.5MM bonus 1.4MM salary)
7 - $7.15MM (6MM bonus 1.15MM salary)
AAV - $9.76MM
Stamkos gets $57MM of the contract paid in bonus (Less hit to the escrow as well i do believe) |

I still don't buy this Stamkos thing. That McKenzie quote came from a tsn segment where he had to choose a team that wasn't already picked. And his other article mentioning the sabres only had them at the top of the list because buffalo came first alphabetically.
Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. |

I agree that there is no way. He is going to end up being traded. Tampa cannot get nothing back for him. He would be the greatest rental asset of all time.
But since it was in the conversation. i offer that contract if he says no, I say Good day sir. |

but how much would he actually bring back as a rental? maybe washington offers their first this year (i have absolutely no idea if they can fit him under the cap or if they even have their first)- but thats probably pick 27-30. probably the best you get is a first from a playoff team. combine a slim return for stamkos and the drouin situation and this is a rough year for yzerman. |

That hit last night near the end of the game was bullshart all the way. Our guy was engaged with another player. The NHL is a disgrace for not even looking at it. |
