Can anyone explain this style of contract to me? I just don't understand it. Is it that the Sabres are on the hook for the signing bonus in the last year of his contract but then could trade him (if he permits) to another team that only has to pay the balance of his $1M salary? Because it's still a 7.5M cap hit, right?

From what I remember from the summer the Sabres would get no cap relief for buying him out, because signing bonuses don't count towards relief. So the only reason to buy him out would be for a contract spot, but they'd save no money. There was some question as to what amount he'd have to pay in escrow. Every player in the NHL pays somewhere in the neighborhood of 25% of their salary into escrow of which they get a portion back at the end of the season once the hockey related revenue gets calculated so that the players only get their ~47% of HRR. It's all very complicated and I'm sure I got some of it wrong, but he only has a what is it $1 or $1.1 million base salary? So which would you rather pay? $250,000 or $2,500,000?

Edit: Looks like escrow is 16%. And the players get an even 50% of HRR. But it's still the same $176,000 or $1,760,000 in escrow the first year of his new contract. And some players rightly are pissed about that.
