Wow, just wow. This was going to be exactly my post. Add John Scott. I would say Buffalo is known for goons too, but honestly they are more known for having the dirtiest of the dirty players in the league.

Hopefully Gudas gets suspended. Serious hack writing skills.

Buffalo is known for having the dirtiest players in the game????

What in the living (frank)????

Coming from a Flyers fan of all things... Good lord.

I love how you have ot name guys from like a decade ago minus Scott but your team still has cheap shot artists on it EVERY F'N YEAR!!!

What do you consider a "goon?" To me, a goon is a player who plays limited minutes whose sole purpose is to fight/hit who offers little in the skill department. To me, guys like Cote/Rosehill/Ray/Peters/Scott fit the bill. I have no issue with those 3, more the Kaleta/Barnaby types, much like Rinaldo was for the Flyers. So glad he's gone.

I consider scott and peters in the "enforcer" role as they're on the ice for a limited time...if I recall correctly, they never laid out a dirty hit on an unsuspecting player...the people they hit (or were hit by in the case of peters) were fully expecting what was coming

I still think Kaleta just got a bad name and then everything he did was blown out of proportion. I think he just played hard and tried to finish every check. Wasn't always the best at perhaps shying away when a player turned shoulders or dished it at the last second.

HAHAHAHA... are you serious!!!!

I think this conversation goes nowhere. All teams have had guys they are not proud of and have made dumb plays. We could go through this all day. Player by player.

A goon to me is just a pure fighter like Parros, Scott, Boogeyman, and Laraque was.

A Cheap shot artist is like Marchand, Carbomb, Rinaldo, Lucic, Torres, etc.

IMO.

Check rule 48.1 section ii regarding illegal hits to the head

Players putting themselves in vulnerable positions are taken into account with regards to the rule. Hard to say contact to the head was unavoidable when a player is coming at you hunched over. I don't necessarily agree with gudas going for the kill shot considering the game situation but as far as supplementary discipline is concerned I don't think the league would have an issue hanging gudas if it were warranted

You may not like what the writing says, but it is very well composed. Pachla is one of the better writers on the site, and Sabres fans are glad to have him.

I agree Gudas should have been suspended - again. Especially after some of the other disciplinary is taken with more controversial hits, it really makes it look bad when the league takes a pass on the stuff that everyone agrees is ugly.

Just an FYI.. there was 3:30 left in the game.

Also, amount of time remaining in a game has nothing to do with hits and or penalties.

Well.... usually in games that are 3+ goals... 3:30 left typically means its over. Not always... but typically. He shouldn't have felt that he needed to make a statement like that on a rookie in his 2nd NHL game ever.

Legal or not.... it was just completely uncalled for.

Arm tucked.
Doesnt leave his feet.
Doesnt propel himself in an upward manner.
Doesnt pick the head.
Doesnt follow through with an elbow.

He went straight through his entire body (as the picture above shows).

Was it a really hard hit on a player who had their head down? Sure was.

Worst thing Kaleta did was probably a few slew foots but he never just straight elbowed someone in the head, jumped into his checks, or blindside cheap shotted guys that I can remember.

- JVince11

I remember him getting suspended for head butting Voracek. As for elbows, the ones on Kulikov and Johnson were pretty nasty, and the latter cost him 10 games.

Again, the Flyers have as checkered a past as any team. But to act as if the Sabres have never had their fair share is just blind homerism.

Again...

legal or not.... IT WAS COMPLETELY UNCALLED FOR IN A 3 GOAL GAME WITH 3 MINUTES LEFT TO PLAY.

He was just trying to be a d1ck. Point blank.

true...but the fact that vandevelde was engaged with, and leaning on, a hunched over and reaching catenacci makes it basically a third man in...he didn't need to do any of the things you mentioned to blast catenacci's head with brute force...it was bushleague, plain and simple

Im not debating that. I have a totally different opinion on that.

Games are 60 minutes (at least) long regardless of the score. A few years ago I was pretty much the only Flyers fan that wasnt fuming when Briere got trucked with under a minute to go in the last game of the season vs the Pens.

You dont want Briere getting hit in that situation... dont put him on the ice. That was a multi-goal differential as well. Either hit or dont.

Another hit that I always go back to is the Campbell-Umberger hit. You guys replayed that hit on the jumbotron OVER AND OVER while he layed on the ice.

Great hit. Unfortunate that he had his head down, but Campbell stepped up and crushed him. poop happens.

Agreed 100%. Legal, but dirty and unnecessary.

No one's calling for the ice capades out there, but a little bit of respect like the players used to have for each other, even back in the 70s, is what people want.

this is the issue with the hit. As a flyers fan I loved the hit. But in no way am I happy he got hurt, just just get that out of the way, however, it was not a needed hit at that point in the game. that's my issue

Quite the difference between Briere and a kid playing his 3rd nhl game... and no one wants anyone getting hit like that

they had a few in the era of ted Nolan, but not even close to the long line of cheapshot artists dating back to the broadstreet bullies...just recently gudas was heir to rinaldo who took over for carcillo...

and the band played on
