Thats part of the fun. You just need to take all these possibilities with a little grain of salt.
A deal with MTL for Patch makes no sense from the Canadians point of view. Patch is one of their core, and I doubt Bergevin is dumping him for any combination of TT/Danault/Dano/Pokka, etc. Patch is the best player in any of those permutations, and will be for several years to come. The MTL press and fanbase would roast him for any deal that does not bring back solid NHL players. NO combination of 2 of those Hawk prospects makes MTL better next season, and when Price comes back they are right back in the thick of things.
A deal for a UFA like Ladd makes more sense because the Jets can get some young pieces in return and still have the possibility of re-signing Ladd in the off-season.
The fantasy dealings here are tons of fun to speculate/dream/wish/etc. but the reality says there needs to be a actual perceived benefit to both sides for it to be feasible. - TheTrob

Not sure how you determine that? Hartman is the only player drafted by either team in the last 3 years to play an NHL game. in 2012 you have Pearson and TT. In 2011 the Hawks drafted Saad and Shaw, LA's draft hasn't amounted to much yet. Wouldn't say LA has been better. - TheTrob
Good catch. I was wrong. Actually thought Gravel was younger and drafted in 13. He was drafted in 10. He is in the NHL this year.
Rather than being better drafters recently I should correct to say LA seems to have a number of mid or late rounders that are panning out well as they get older. Gravel, Ladue (college), Ebert all coming on. That helps their system depth like free agents helped the Hawks. Brodzynski is another late rounder doing nicely in college. |

Now, I realize that this looks like a daily accrual, but it's not. If you had daily accrual, then the Penguins (in your hypo) would be allowed to operate ABOVE $71.4m before trading Malkin and Crosby. If the rest of their roster had an AAV of $56.4, they would be able to pay out $15m (3/4 of a $20m AAV) to Sid and Geno and then trade them away for picks at the 3/4 point of the season. But that's not how it works. Malkin and Crosby started the year with the Penguins, so their cap hit is always their AAV under the current CBA. On the flip side, when they're traded, their cap hit disappears completely; the $15m in salary Pittsburgh would have paid out to them doesn't count against them.
Confused yet?

Thanks for the reference to the pertinent parts of the CBA.
Looked back at the bolded part above... I think you mean that the previous $15M paid to Malkin and Crosby by the Penguins does not count against the new team they are traded to for the rest of the season. |

What if the Hawks traded Danault with the deal you said (Danault+TT) & made a separate trade for Rask to replace him? - Dabearshawks

No, I mean it doesn't count against Pittsburgh. As soon as they're traded, their cap hit in Pittsburgh vanishes -- poof. |

And now Gustafsson is in the doghouse, which leads me to wonder what the blueline will actually look like in mid April. - ArlingtonRob
Maybe they're stretching his legs out just enough. I believe his career high in games played is in the 50's. Keep him fresh for the postseason?

Why is TT or Dano and by the way throw Bickell in considered realistic?Last time that I checked Rask was doing way better than either and yet on this board his value seems diminished. |

If I can change the focus from trade talk to the wonderful commissioner of the NHL, I am wondering if anyone else is having a problem with this issue? Last week when he was in Chicago discussing the importance of the history of the NHL (having the draft here in an original 6 city for the league's 100 year), we are faced this weekend with an outdoor game between the Blackhawks and Wild. As part of this weekend's events is an alumni game between Chicago and North Stars/Wild. Now, does anyone see a problem with this? The Wild and North Stars are not the same franchise (Dallas Stars and North Stars would be logical). Why would the league allow such a game, when to us old-time fans it is a slap in the face to lump the NorthStars and Wild as the same franchise?
Carry on with trade talk now. |

No one fives a (frank) about the Alumni game.
The Wild probably dont have enough alumni for the game.
Lots of folk in Minnesota love the Northstars old timers.
