good question, to answer that you need to ask yourself questions regarding each player

your buiding a roster to compete for the next 5/6 years


IMO kane, eichel, skunk and ror are the only legit top 6 players on this roster

ennis, girgens, moulson, mcginn, gionta are not

do you want to pay ennis, moulson, girgens, mcginn etc to be third line players? or build the prospect pool and be able to plug young energy players on cheap deals

do you pay foligno decent coin for being a 4th line player? Do you trust him to be a third line player?

IMO with larsson, deslaurers and schaller, you have 3 cheap options for your bottom 2 lines

on the d, I think we all agree risto is a #2, bogo is a 3/4
That leaves 2 holes in your top 4, do you pay gorges, wait for mccabe/pysyk to develop?

They are IMO where they need to get a few more upgrades on the roster.


right now we have 47 players under contract, can only have 50
I think once they get 4 more top guys, 2 up front and 2 on the blue line, the team will shake out and be stable

1 JR ( Guhle ) does not count until he plays more than 9 games.
They will not likely re-sign any of their own UFA's, they will not tender Leduc, Nevins, Jacobs, Makarov or Verone.
They will sign Cornel, Fasching, Oloffson, Possler, B. Martin, Kasdorf, Guhle, possibly the #1 pick and maybe Florrentino.
Roster on July 1st will include:
22 regular contracts
9 RFA's signed or tendered
9 new
That makes 40. They have a lot of room to add.

That's a lot of RFA's could add up to a huge chunk of change if they pan out.

They don't. They stay in a constant state of rebuilding because that builds hope for the future, keeps fans anxious and happy and keeps people in power from being held accountable for the results. IE: See the Buffalo Bills.

Depends if you're considering the oft injured version of Ennis we're seeing this season, or the very consistent point producer we saw for the prior 5 seasons. His ceiling was almost 50 pts during that time and I'd say that fits the role of a 2nd line guy on most teams.

A lot of folks want to write him off but I think it's worth while to see if he's going to return to form through the remainder of this season or next.
