You mean like the guy Vancouver acquired a year ago from Calgary?
- fiveandagame

sorta... I like Granlund but he's never become the player the Flames thought he was... Its not as one sided as it appears IMO

Here is the difference between the Canucks and a team like the blackhawks. Identify your core, pay them well and give them term. Players who are hot, sell high and build through PROPER drafting and making good hockey deals. Trading a rising play like Saad and bringing in good players like Anisimov (a big reason for the success of the Kane-Panarin line) and bringing in a highly talented player in Dano is HUGE. Don't wait for playoffs to drop off. Obviously I don't mean to trade every player every time their stock rises and they are on a streak, but identify who is replaceable and what the return COULD be.
- Codes1087

Great players make the ones around them better. Because they've been around for a few years now, people forget how long and how hard Chicago sucked in order to acquire that core of 5-6 outstanding players. The supporting cast they drafted and developed and have turned over several times also provided the assets to acquire more picks and prospects that they have been able to bring into their lineup as needed. Their tanking for years may not have been intentional, but it was spectacularly successful.

Heres an idea. Lets not call up our best offensive prospect from utica on this terrible team that needs offensive help. Lets trade him to our rival for a Door Stopper.

Granlund has been ok but I think he's been given the chance to shine and has been just meh. Again a reset maybe helps his NHL career...
- geta02it

Sounds awfully similar to some of the Flame fan comments on the Sven trade. I didnt know much about this Granlund before the trade and actually dont mind it as much now that I've looked into it a bit more, hoping for a similar result

My apologies. Its very difficult for me to actually produce steam coming out of my ears.

This stupid trade has managed to do so.

- vancity787

he might amount to nothing.

late 1st rounders like hunter usualy do amount to nothing

but you did get a fringe NHLer in return.

it really might equal out to be a wash

You think....... The only positive we can take from this is that Benning for once in his entire life didn't include a pick going the other way.

Sven was too much about Sven. He needed a change. Granlund was honestly ok. He didn't make allot of mistakes but didn't contribute on the flipside either. Maybe a change will do him good. We thought he'd be trade bait and I think this might work out for both guys long term.

Trying to rationalize this sh!t. Still don't make sense on so many levels.

Centers: Sedin, Sutter, Horvat, Vey, McCann, Granlund, Cracknell and that's only at the NHL level.

Utica currently fighting for a playoff spot, trades it's leading scorer....

If we acquired him to trade him/trade off another center i would assume it should have happened by now....

Man, wtf?

CanuckDon was spot on, no need to over react, let's not rush to judgement...

I don't want to say, in JB we trust, but time will tell how this works out.

(not saying you over reacted, I was looking forward to Shink in our uni, always seemed positive)

i actually like Granlunds game.... he's definitely got more edge than Shink and a bit more size. His AHL stats have actually been better than Shink and is a bit further along in his development.

Sure but at the end of the day Shink has a couple more years to see if he amounts to anything, Granlund has the rest of this season before he becomes a waiver eligible player.

Wiesbrod, our current Assistant GM was the one responsible for drafting the Janitor in Calgary when he was AGM there.....

He was also there when they drafted Baertschi and Granlund.

Per Corey Pronman:

"My thoughts on the Calgary-Vancouver deal involving Markus Granlund and Hunter Shinkaruk:

The trade is pretty fair. While Shinkaruk has the sparkle next to his name as a touted player for many years, and being a first round pick, Granlund has arguably been as much if not more impressive as a pro. Shinkaruk has the dynamic skill that makes you dream on big-time upside, but Granlund is no slouch either in terms of skill. He can make plays with the puck and shows good vision, even though he’s not a high-end player in terms of skating.

Granlund also has the positional advantage of being able to play down the middle competently, and has adjusted to the AHL/NHL ranks slightly better than Shinkaruk has. Hunter though can make particular type of elite offensive plays than Granlund can’t ratchet himself up to. Shinkaruk has struggled with the physical nature of the pro level, has shown a lot of inconsistencies in his offensive game, and isn’t as good defensively as Granlund.

Both are players who are impressive in their own rights, but have yet to elevate themselves to a top-tier level. Shinkaruk was at that point as a teenager, but Granlund has probably passed him slightly in terms of total player value.

Shinkaruk has drawn mixed opinions in 1.5 seasons in the AHL. I talk to some people around the AHL and they love him, and think he’s one of the best forward prospects in the minors. Others say “don’t let him near my organization” due to the aforementioned issues in his game. Whatever camp you’re in will determine your overall thoughts on this trade. I used to be a big Shinkaruk fan and in observations this season he's shown me those great flashes, but I have also observed him enough lately to have serious questions about his long-term projection.

I’d grade this deal as a marginal win for Vancouver. "

There you have it...a win for Vancouver.(from a knowledgable source). The drama queens will pass over this post

Plus, Benning trades the kid right before he's set to break Utica's all time scoring record.
What a Richard move.
