We need Tanner's expert opinion to seal the real winner in this trade...

Benning: "Markus may not be as flashy as Hunter but the skill set is still there. The potential of Rodin coming to play for us factored into this decision"
- Codes1087

Good lord, using Anton (frank)ing Rodin as any form of "factor" is just (frank)ing abysmally sad.

"So ya, we got this 25 year old, you know, made of glass Swede who already washed out of the AHL so we figured, like, if we picked up Granlund it would, you know, help his transition over".

So then why trade him for a center which we have zero use for. Its a terrible trade for no other reason than we added to the position that we are strongest at and continue to do nothing to improve on defense.
- mauryballstein

Are centers or wingers typically more valuable? Perhaps there is another trade in the works? Think before you post ?

Apparently he also plays wing, so I wouldnt worry so much on the backlog of C's. Shink wasnt going to get a good defensive prospect so no point debating that, he would have to be in a package to get that type of return

I think he thinks the janitor will go to free agency and sign with Van instead of signing in Calgary.

Maybe people should recall how outraged they were about the Sven and Very trades. And then reflect on how they grade those moves now??
- dbot

I liked the sven trade then and now... Didnt like the vey trade then and still dont like it now and like it even less after todays deal.

He is saying that they want to give Rodin a shot and Shink is a similar undersized scoring winger. How many spots do we have for small top 6 wingers ?

Kid has better AHL numbers. NHL numbers have been suppressed due to the fact that he's had to play behind Monahan, Backlund, Bennett, Stajan
- Mungo

I'm OK with this move.
Surprised with the level of outrage.
This allows us to bring in more rookies next year that don't reqi top 6 role.

Why do we need another winger? we dont.. I argue a team looking for scoring wingers would gladly deal a dman prospect for him.. why wouldnt they?

on Granlund, I think elite prospects is saying he is a good spitter with the loogies?

as seen both in SM-liiga and in the AHL, his seemingly phlegmatic disposition can be deceptive. -

He is considered one of he best prospect analysts. Just a guy that writes stuff? Isn't that what Button or Mackenzie are lol
But I suspect you know more than pronman

- CanuckDon

I bet your were one of the ones crying that Shinkaruk didn't make Pronman's top 50 and was a hack because leafs prospects were in the top 10......

Rodin will be a good player next year but again add another forward in rodin who is further along then granlund. This deal makes zero sense. Absolutely zero.

Per Corey Pronman:

"My thoughts on the Calgary-Vancouver deal involving Markus Granlund and Hunter Shinkaruk:

The trade is pretty fair. While Shinkaruk has the sparkle next to his name as a touted player for many years, and being a first round pick, Granlund has arguably been as much if not more impressive as a pro. Shinkaruk has the dynamic skill that makes you dream on big-time upside, but Granlund is no slouch either in terms of skill. He can make plays with the puck and shows good vision, even though he’s not a high-end player in terms of skating.

Granlund also has the positional advantage of being able to play down the middle competently, and has adjusted to the AHL/NHL ranks slightly better than Shinkaruk has. Hunter though can make particular type of elite offensive plays than Granlund can’t ratchet himself up to. Shinkaruk has struggled with the physical nature of the pro level, has shown a lot of inconsistencies in his offensive game, and isn’t as good defensively as Granlund.

Both are players who are impressive in their own rights, but have yet to elevate themselves to a top-tier level. Shinkaruk was at that point as a teenager, but Granlund has probably passed him slightly in terms of total player value.

Shinkaruk has drawn mixed opinions in 1.5 seasons in the AHL. I talk to some people around the AHL and they love him, and think he’s one of the best forward prospects in the minors. Others say “don’t let him near my organization” due to the aforementioned issues in his game. Whatever camp you’re in will determine your overall thoughts on this trade. I used to be a big Shinkaruk fan and in observations this season he's shown me those great flashes, but I have also observed him enough lately to have serious questions about his long-term projection.

I’d grade this deal as a marginal win for Vancouver. "

Don't trust pronman. He has 8 Leafs prospects in the top 60 or so league wide.

Even worse.

How soon we forget.
Does anyone remember Rodin's tenure with this team?

Hunter Shinkaruk has a very cap friendly contract as he is only on the 1st year of his entry level deal. Grandlund is an RFA and waiver ineligible.

------------

WHY NOT WAIT TO SEE WHAT SHINKARUK COULD DO IN THE NHL FIRST.

He is not a good Dman
- VANTEL

I agree not stellar but with a watered down talent pool this seems to be player quality for the 6-7 D slot on most clubs. I'm sure they may be a better option out there...guess we'll see

The guy had a bunch of injuries and is now leading the SHL in scoring and costs no assets to bring over. No problem with that but that doesnt excuse trading shink for a guy who might not ever even play on this team.

The direction of this team is dreadful

I dont mind him getting more guys on the NHL roster that are under 25, regardless of position to be honest. Every team needs bottom 6 and I dont think Shink was going to be there next year in bottom 6 nor do I see any team sending anything worthwhile in terms of defensive prospects. Maybe Harrington from the Marlies? I think that kind of player would be the market for Shink's value

But why do that I mean he got to play 6 minutes in a game this season.. That should be enough to know he is garbage and will never do anything.

This is benning making another stupid move trying to speed up the rebuild and nothing more and he has done nothing to fix the teams weakness which is defense.

Sure, he used to get injured alot....

He just suffered a season ending injury in the low-contact SHL after 33 games
