I was beside myself when I heard about this trade. Shinkaruk to Calgary for Granlund? Like pissed off! Shinkaruk is having an amazing sophomore season with the Comets.

What is worse than this trade, is Benning's rationale!
1) "Granlund has more NHL experience" - That is true, but 86 games over 3 seasons is nothing to be proud of.
2) "Shinkaruk's goals are too flashy" - Um. What? You mean he can score great goals with flair.
3) "Granlund is more mature" - He's 22 & Shinkaruk is 21
4) "Granlund plays centre, but can play LW also" - Shinkaruk plays LW
5) "We have a logjam at LW" - Now we have a logjam at C.
6) "We really like LW Gaunce & hope he makes the jump to the NHL" - if he doesn't, that would have been Shinkaruk's opportunity

Need I say more?

Benning is making it really hard to be a Canucks' fan right now. I'm still not 100% confident in Baertschi & Sutter is a waste of money and air.

The Canucks need to move out a number of contracts, but a promising young player (and 1st round pick) isn't one of them. Trade Higgins, Burrows, Sbisa, Hamhuis, Bartkowski, Sutter, Vey, Miller, etc. Don't trade away young players with tremendous upside, especially before they either prove themselves at the NHL level or falter.

I still don't believe that Markstrom is the future of the franchise, and I'm holding on to the hope of Thatcher Demko. That being said, we need to bring in another young goalie to fill the void. Bachmann & Miller are not worth the paper they are written on.

I know a bunch of Canucks' fans have called for Jannik Hansen to be traded, but I think that you should reconsider. At $2.5 million for two more seasons, his contract is low enough to be worth the points he puts up. He is an agile player who can play on any line, on the PP & PK, and can hit as well as score. I have followed Hansen's career since his time in Denmark & Sweden, through to the WHL when he was drafted... wait for it
.. 287th overall (9th round) of the 2004 draft by the Canucks. Considering that only 20 of the 30 1st round picks are still playing in the NHL, Hansen is a successful veteran player. At 29 years old, Hansen is in his prime. While he's not a super offensive threat, he has scores 216 points in 525 NHL games (plus 18 points in 64 playoff games). I'm not confident Bennjng/Linden could get a better player in return, and draft picks may or may not become NHL calibre players.

Just my 2 cents...

we all have to stop and remember that we dont really KNOW any of these players outside of stats. There's more to know. He is said to have an attitude problem. Does he miss practice? Does he even like being a canuck? His development in important areas has been slow reportedly. Maybe the plans didnt have enough room for him?

We have to trust there was a good reason here and that they know more and stuff we dont and cant.

This is a rebuild. No need for paperbags or throwing waffles.

Every time we talk about asset management, Chicago is the best example of trading away good players and replacing them with value contract fillers and prospects that can fill the void in a year or two. They make the tough decisions (like who would've thought to trade Saad??) and keep steady near the top of the league. Even fan and room favourite Sharp was moved to keep the team competitive. Van would never do that

- WhiteLie

Chicago traded Saad because they couldn't afford to pay him.
