The parity is just a marketable side effect of controlling player salaries. Other side effects include transactions that make little sense to anybody who doesn't follow the numbers closely, league wide roster stiffness, and teams generally needing to either wager years of potential cap paralysis or game the system (and hope Bettman doesn't take offense) just to improve their team. It's just dandy, loads of fun. - BulliesPhan87
I am a diehard fan like a lot of us here but I have to admit the league has really been boring for me to watch and follow (games wise and otherwise) the past few years. Maybe it has been because the flyers have been so mediocre to bad but when I watch any game, for the most part they all seem to be much more boring than in the past. Like when is the last time we got so amped watching a game like when the flyers would play the penguins even back just 8 years ago.

PP1: Coots-Ghost-Schenn-Simmer-Jake (Coots filled in on G's half wall. People were ripping him, but really once they gained the zone they weren't bad. G is as good as it gets on the PP, especially gaining entries, so of course there'll be a drop off)
PP2: AMac-Streit-White-Raffl-Cousins....though later in the game Ghost double shifted both units, and Gagner was subbed for either Raffl or Cousins. They were a mess.
Now, once healthy, imagine a second unit like: Coots-Streit-Medvedev-Laughton-Raffl. Why Laughts gets no PP time is insane. Even Chief gave him time. He might have the best shot on the team. He'd be lethal on the left wall. I just don't get it. - Mononoke
I do like Hakstol but some of his personal decisions seem a little off.
Laughton should get time on #2.
Medvedev should be playing and a big part of PP #2.
I sure do love the accounting side of following my favorite team, especially when the league doesn't seem to want me to know the basic details - BulliesPhan87

Well, part of that could be attributed to the need for more scoring/scoring chances versus the dropping frequency of fights (which I don't have a problem with in and of itself). A lot of games feel like literally nothing happens. The Flyers failure to compete probably colors our opinions too.
The salary cap makes it dull to follow on a week to week and month to month basis, though. It's hard to get excited about your team when the long game is waiting for poison contracts to expire or find new homes.
That said, I still love our team and our sport, just not enough to give up my other favorite past time: complaining.
I have been all for getting rid of the cap for so long now. Yes the cap has created more parity but I don't believe its for the better. To me, the game has been diluted to a degree. I like the idea of allowing teams to build absolutely stacked rosters and have epic battles. To me, the stacked teams of the past was one of the reasons we had huge rivalries like Detroit and Colorado. Obviously, the quality of opponent is only one aspect but there were teams like them and the Rangers and Flyers and Penguins who were head and shoulders above the others in the league and when they would collide, it would be intense.
Obviously, the intensity/animosity has gone down and it can't logically all be explained bc of the increased parity, but I think it is one part of it. Because all teams are so equal, they all employ pretty much the same strategies and tactics and it hasn't really let teams to develop their own unique identities (AS much as in the past). Also, it is damn near impossible to keep all of your young talent as they develop, as is, because they will require new contracts you won't be able to afford. Yeah, Chicago has kept most of their core in tact but that is more the exception than the rule.
Maybe I'm not expressing it correctly, but I think the salary cap has led to a watered down product essentially. - orangekrush2010
I get what you're saying and I would be all for loosening the rules, but I don't want this to be the NBA with 4 top teams and everyone else sucks. It really does suck that if Morin, Prov, Ghost, Sanheim, Konecy ect. all become studs, we won't be able to keep them all or have to make sacrifices at other positions. I think there could be a better way but I have no idea what it could be.

Of course the games are going to be more exciting when you're a playoff team. These were good times:

just got a notice from this past weekend that I was charged by Uber.."Your Uber driver reports that there was an incident that resulted in a mess in his car and required professional cleaning. We have charged your credit card on file 65$."
Don't remember any mess. Makes it sound like my buddy and I decided to un-pants ourselves and take a poo on his backseat.

I mean when we didn't have a cap before the first lockout, it wasn't like the NBA. Calgary made it to the SC in 2004 and probably had no business being there. Hockey is too much a team-oriented sport where the star players can take over a game but not to the extent as in the NBA. I don't think we'd ever become a league like that. Never were and won't in the future.

The NHL hasn't exactly featured a huge variety of top teams recently, either.
Per your last part, I'd like to do one of the following:
1) Any player that you drafted and who has never played for another NHL team can have his salary not count against the cap.
2) Any player(s) that you drafted and who have never played for another NHL team only count against your cap at 90% of their salary (i.e. $10M and 8 years counts as $9M for 8 years).
This keeps the cap in place, but rewards teams for not signing FA's to massive deals. - jmatchett383
I wouldn't mind something like baseball has in the Rule 5 pick. NHL team can protect so many players. If you lost a player maybe you got a compensatory pick in the draft.
Would allow player movement and maybe see more prospects make it with change in scenery and coaching. I don't know.

This is the one I prepped most for.
A hot dog is a hot dog.
It is not a sandwich.

Yes, the salary cap did a great job of making sure that big spenders like Toronto, Philadelphia, NYR, Boston, LA, and Chicago no longer won ever Cup like they did in the 20 years preceding the lockout. Thank God for the salary cap so that small market teams like NJ, Colorado, TB, Anaheim, and Dallas had a chance.
Please. The whole salary cap for parity is complete bullpoop. It's all about the money for owners.
