I have serious doubts about this. I'm envisioning Holik 2.0 - mdw7413
Bobby Holik was a big 2 way player that thrived on a team that lacked offensive weapons. He was a checking forward not even in the same league as E Staal in terms of offensive skill.
We could have both sure, but Eric Staal will infuriate us. - tomburton99
I mean I'd love to trade for someone like Patrick Kane or Evengi Malkin who's in their prime and guaranteed to succeed but thats just not really realistic

if Eric Staal was actually having a good year the price would be through the roof

That is the part that always bugs me with these things -- like you said, Staal is only even arguably acquirable for a reasonable price because he is having a crap year. If he was having an Eric Staal year from five years ago, you wouldn't have the guns to acquire him. The Rangers only get him if the price isn't insane, and as a roll of the dice that they can squeeze something out of him for the next three months.

we want to trade a 3rd round pick for a guy who has 30 goals and 30 assists

Yea people are afraid of trading for potential and want to wait until a player realizes it...but if a player realizes his potential why would the team he plays for trade him?

Slats shook hands on a deal to acquire Steven Stamkos because Stamkos wasn't playing well early in his career. A year later, that type of deal wasn't even being discussed.
Of course, there is risk with these type deals. Sometimes they work out for the acquiring club, like Seguin in Dallas. And sometimes they don't.
Drouin is the next up. We will see how that one turns out.
Edit: Staal is a different type of deal. It's a deal for an older rental that could be had a better price, because he's having a crap year. Maybe he turns it around. It's a roll of the dice.

Staal this year is less of an offensive weapon then a retired Holik

Staal does have a NTC, so if he handcuffs his GM into negotiating with just 2 or 3 teams, 1 of which is the Rangers, he could be had at a discount.
3rd rounder? Probably not. But a 2nd a mid prospect like what Vanek brought back the Isles after they lost all their leverage? That type of package could probably get it done if Carolina believes Staal will walk as a free agent.
Other teams would have to be brain dead to do these deals.. More likely happening is to grossly overpay E. Staal to graze and retire here... - nyrsucks

I might. Honestly. Because he's done. Like Dan Boyle. Eric Staal is totally spent. He's on the wing to help get back into a scoring role and that can't even help him. His brother being bought by the Canes etc. Eric Staal is finished. - tomburton99
But he still has his name and that's NY Rangers hockey
