Edmonton fans thought he sucked ... everyone who has watched him play thinks he sucks. We essentially gave up a third round pick for a crappy Dman who is a pending RFA that we really can't afford to resign based on his QO. I would rather have my third round pick back. - Oneonta Penguin
If I recall, we got a third rounder for letting Shero to to NJ That is how much a 3rd rounder is worth |

the Pensblog actually had an interesting way of looking at this trade. About 20% of 3rd round picks play over 100 NHL games. So we're essentially saying, does Schultz have a greater than 20% chance of being useful? And, of course, we dont have to wait 3 years to find out. - YouMeAndDupuis9
Exactly my point and probably not 3 years more like 5 |

I think 200 NHL games is a better measure and that is less than 12% of 3rd rounders. Less than 200 NHL games isn't a useful player IMO. |

1 out of every 5 players drafted in the third round MAKE the NHL let alone turn out to be great... The pick should be a late 3rd, hopefully the last in the round, and it's a small price for a possible starter. Give him a few games before ruling it a bad trade. - hipcheck_goalie
He isn't a starter. He is an 8th Dman type. |

I hope they trade all their futures they've been drafting/developing for him. Staal is not even close to playing up to his contract so this would be a stupid trade for Filthy. Then again, considering the source (Eklund) I doubt it is credible. |

Versteeg to law for prospect and 5th - nh4442
From what I can tell, it is a good- not great- prospect. Decent return for Carolina. Pens couldn't match that. |

Talking about Staals, who would have ever thought that Brian Dumoulin would currently be the most impactful piece of the Jordan Staal trade. |

That's why you get throw ins whenever possible. It's just grabbing another lottery ticket like an extra draft pick. Dupuis was another one. |

Makes no sense like most of Ek's "rumors". Staal is having a nice year. His impact can't always be judged on points. However, yes he's over-paid. Contract is long too. 6 more years....ouch.

Trying to think what the going rate would be for him as far as Philly. The other Staal, a pending UFA, got two seconds and a B prospect for 50% retention. Jordan is signed for six more years. No, he hasn't lived up to his contract at all and there is a lot of time left. Still a solid two-way forward. Probably a first and a good prospect. ... maybe Stolarz or one of those young D prospects? |

The trade makes no sense from either team's perspective IMO. I guess Carolina could take some salary back, but I would think they want at least two premier future assets to make that deal. So Filthy's 2016 1st and one of their top dmen prospects. |

Kessel. Not even close. Staal might be great defensively, but for $6m/yr you gotta produce more than he has on his contract. |

Jordan Staal questioning his life choices....
http://www.sportsnet.ca/h...-envisioned-it-happening/ - TheGame316
I don't begrudge Jordan for his decision. But he is a complete moron if he didn't think this was a possible outcome. He left a perpetual playoff team that spends to the cap every season for a perpetual non-playoff team with an internal budget on the same contract. |

Saw about three different reports about Kunitz being out there on the market. Not sure if this is a case of one false report spreading or if its true....but I have no idea what the market would be or what to want in return.
My only preference is that if we trade Kunitz, we should trade Pouliot for a LW |
