I think only in buffalo do people prefer 3rd liners over potential first liners, and want to resign 3rd liners for 20 million than shipping him out for maximizing assets.

Bolded that, what should be a 4 letter word around Sabres fans, for serious emphasis.

It's not so much that Girgensons would be gone in a potential deal for Drouin. It's more that Drouin is a bit of an unknown and you are hinging the player he may become almost totally on potential, and how many players, for how long, have we been dealing with the word potential around here? Far too long.

Similarly, if you can trade a guy like Pysyk ++ for somebody like Lindholm, you do it because Lindholm is realized potential, and further, he is what you would hope Pysyk could be, and more.

With all that said, I would be very cautious trading anybody on the team for Drouin outside of it being a steal of a deal, due to the unknowns about him.

If it was a proven top 6 player, or even top line winger, I don't think many, if any, would have a problem with sending Girgensons the other way.

It's all about the question marks surrouding Drouin. That and they already took a chance on Kane.

I am a Girgensons fan. Two years ago I was very excited at the idea of having him in the organization and viewed him as an untouchable. Sky was the limit for him.
Last year he showed signs of continued growth in the middle of the tank year, before being hurt, that is.
This year has been a year mired in confusion for me, with regards to Zemgus. I love the style of game he plays, and make that judgement using the eye test, without diving too deep into the analytics of his game. I am growing more concerned that his "all-out" style of play will create more and more injuries and thus, render him less valuable. You can't tell a guy to slow down, that's his game, but I think this is something to wrestle with, the idea that an oft-injured player naturally loses value.
I am not looking to trade Girgensons today, unless the right piece is coming back in return. But I have certainly removed him off of my 'untouchables' list.
