Why?

Regardless, I wasn't calling it a loss. I was just pointing out that he traded one of our top prospects for a questionable return. It could work out, but it could also backfire or become irrelevant.

- golfingsince

How the heck would I know?

I'm neither the coach of the Comets or the GM...look, he could have had a drug/alcohol problem, or been a total nightmare to coach or unwilling to do x, y, z...we never know these things. When you read enough hockey books or coach any team that has a cut or spend some time managing people for a living you start to appreciate how difficult it must be.

Hockey is potentially the worst too, because most of these guys are small town, uneducated teenagers, totally devoted to sports alone since their pre-teens...not exactly world-travelled with a wide base of knowledge.

Other GM's have scouts. They know the background on a player when they might want them. The fact that he was shopped and that's all Benning got, tells you something. I think he was a top-prospect on paper. In the real world, I think Benning probably got the best he could.

You're right it could backfire, but only if Calgary can fix a problem that Vancouver couldn't...

If it becomes an unmitigated disaster does Linden get a 2nd chance with a GM or is he swept out as well ?
- golfingsince

Linden stays no matter what. Only way he leaves is by his own choice. If Trevor got fired that would be an absolute public relations disaster.

I think Linden would stay on, since he's the more PR that will be needed with the rebuild. Would Linden bring it up to Benning to bring in someone to handle the trade aspects?

I do think he'll be back on a team friendly deal unless Benning doesn't want him(doubtful with how bad this defense is and how bad the UFA market is).

No choice now, he will be resigned.

I wondered the same thing. Or does he get bumped down in to the scouting department and another GM brought in all together.

He signs in Dallas this summer?

Also, I'm alluding to the hysteria expression.

Certainly it's been much worse here in the past than it has this past week?

maybe, I was a casual reader before I started posting, and I would venture to guess it is all pretty depressing to everyone involved... some people just want to vent, and maybe this is like one of the times where wifey says, you are not supposed to respond, just sit, listen and nod.

Not picking a fight Makita but what are we left with? Do we take everything a sports manager or pro player states publicly? To be honest I don't believe a word management says publicly and most players are so guarded now you never get a straight answer, just a bunch of clichés.

Media types have the most to lose if they make a wrong statement. Hell, some sports management types have threatened to sue the media over what’s perceived as erroneous reporting. If it’s reported by mainstream media then I think you can be certain there’s some truth to it.

- bloatedmosquito

Definitely conflicting reports right now so I don't know who to believe

- Friedman has refuted multiple claims made by Benning in his press conference
- McKenzie has refuted multiple claims made by Benning in his press conference
- Dreger has refuted multiple claims made by Benning in his press conference

But nothing will come of it as no GM from another team is going to all of sudden say Benning is lying.

I've done plenty of both.

Again, I haven't called out Benning on the deal. I've just said don't be so quick to point out he hasn't traded any of our top prospects.

Thankfully, he has yet to move any of our young roster players for a middling return. I'm not crying out to fire Benning, just pointing out that he's been underwhelming.

Would it?? After a day like today, I expect a firing. I have never seen a team fail to trade an asset like hamhuis at the deadline when they're so clearly out of the playoff race. It is absolutely inexcusable and a day like this will define this franchise for the next few years because they have lost the fans.

Unless this team makes a massive splash and signs stamkos this off season, there will be no less than 4000 empty seats every game next year.

IF he's not very good at his job, you'd hope he keeps it as it makes yours easier.

That was an IF not an if by the way.

Prolong the rebuild. If Trevor gets fired we should sign him to a home town discount also maye be could find someone to mentor. Jovo was here last night too I wish the hell we offered him a cheap contract also

We could reunite the Courtnalls and Lumi

I know you're not picking a fight and I like thoughtful discussion, so what I witnessed on the "Breaking Trade Deadline" broadcast was the informed panel saying I'm not sure why Hamhuis wasn't traded, but this is what we know....then they go on to tell of the 2 teams that Hamhuis would have agreed to, then a bunch of banter speculating.

Hamhuis comes on and tells his story...surrounded by a scrum trying their hardest to get a snippet of a slip or trying to get Hamhuis to contradict himself.

Then Benning comes on and the same thing by media again, I have a hard time believing anything that they say, unless of course it's corroborated by both parties involved.

Hard to predict, Linden is like an icon in Vancouver, and a FA choice while Gillis was still here. So I say he probable stays, but who knows with FA

Toronto/Sundin

I am all for making a free agent splash in the summer, Stamkos would be great, but still hope we are able to sign a top 4 dman.

on another note, some are suggesting ownership interference, and I have a hard time believing FA would have vetoed any trades today that would help the team sell tickets and fill seats. Doesn't make business sense. Greed outweighs petty squabbles for the most part....

It may be a public relations disaster if he stands too firmly in Benning's corner.

Yes, and he came right out and said he wasn't waiving......then nearly willed the Leafs to the playoffs.

He WASN"T a tradeable asset, but I really admired what he did that year.

10 years ago . Sundin also told everyone weeks before I am not waiving. He didn't have everyone hanging on to the last minute

With the cap expected to potentially decrease, the teams with cap space will control everything. Basically they'll have cap ceiling teams begging them to make Ehrhoff for Patrick White or Patrick Sharp for Johnny Oduya type of deals.

A lot of teams won't have anything to spend in the UFA market either.
