Benning and Linden have been super criticized since even arriving in VAN in Management. This will relieve some of the heat they are taking from the fanbase over the lack of movement they did at TDL. I have a tremendous amount of respect for Hamhuis and would love to see him in a Canucks uniform for 3 years. This team is not going to be competitive for the next 3 or 4 years, so why not have a leader mentor the up and coming young kids on D. Hamhuis for 3 years a 3.5-4 million. Full NTC in first 2 years, limited NTC (10 teams) in final year. - Codes1087
This would be the smartest move ....a guy with hamhuis experience is a great thing to have when bringing in young players |

[quote=MaWLz]According to a highly placed Stars source, the Stars and Canucks had a deal in place. It wasn’t exactly the same as the trade that eventually sent Calgary’s Kris Russell to Dallas but it was “similar.”
The deal was taken to Canucks ownership. Ownership requested more. The Stars rejected that request and made the trade with the Flames.
Dallas then came back to the Canucks with a lesser offer for Hamhuis — believed to be a draft pick in 2017 — but were turned down.
“They lost the deal,” the source said. “The deal Calgary got was pretty much available to Vancouver.”
Interesting...imagine that, Benning covering for the guy that signs his pay cheque

I bet your right ...the longer he goes unsigned the more it gets brought up that he isn't signed and they got nothing for him - Redmile247
I wouldn't mind if Hamhuis isn't brought back, disappointing the club wasn't able to turn him into some picks or prospects through a trade.
If he is given another contract here, JB should move Edler, Sbisa or both.
I was listening to 1040 this morning, bad mistake, and there was a caller that pointed out that a win-win a week ago would have been trading Hamhuis and re-signing him in the summer, why wouldn't it be a win if he stayed and resigned? the bs answer from Pratt was it was no longer a win because there was an offer on the table that the Canucks didn't jump at... so if he re-signed here, it was no longer a win.
This is a messed up market.

From the outside looking in its puzzling...I get the not trading as there was very little market as evidenced by so little movement..
What i find strange is in interviews Hamhuis kept saying over and over "I want to stay here""Want to play here again next year".Has he been promised a contract for next season no matter what?
Given his stance on remaining a Nuck wouldn't one think that it scared away the little market there was in maybe teams felt he wouldn't give 100% if he really didn't want to leave..
Given recent success do the Nucks really want to continue locking up this core? - Fruitcakenipple
Who else on the core have they resigned beside the twins recently ? |

What I meant was nucker twice or three times mentioned that Stall only submitted one team and a deal got done...so by that logic Benning had 2 teams so should have had no issues making a deal.
So I was being facetious in saying that CMcD can be jesus on skates so all rookies should be jesus on skates...what's good for one is good for all...what do you think sound logic? - Makita
Yes and no. Once GMs got wind that Hamhuis would only waive for two clubs I's sure the lowballing started from CHI and DAL. WAS BOS AND PIT all rumored to have legit offers for hamhuis but he would not waive for the east.
I'm frustrated too and feel that this is the first real screw up by mngt....having said that I also and starting to understand why a deal could not get done. Vrbata is a whiney pouter that got injured at possibly THE worst time before TDL and has looked brutal all year. Hammer is an injury prone over 33 year old dman who is barely top 4 right now and produces NO points anymore while still pretty solid defensively.
Yesterday was disappointing but was it really all that shocking? |

Not a lot i guess (Twins/Tanev/Sibisa/Burrows/ Edler /Sutter) have term.. Hamhuis would be another added to the core and one would assume he's gonna get more than the 4.5 he's making now... |

I hear ya, but unless the Canucks are planning on resigning Hamhuis, getting nothing is completely unacceptable, even if it was a 5th or something along those lines.
I understand that pride, ego and setting bad precedents sometimes hinder deals, but sometimes that stuff needs to be put aside to get the job done.
With 5 minutes to go in the TDL, Benning should have been greasing his own hoop and over a barrel if that's what it took to get Hamhuis, Vrbata, Higgins and Burrows done. - As_I_See_It
No what's unacceptable is trading Hammer for a 5th. You can get more for his rights before the draft. For (frank)sakes people. If our GM allows himself to be bent over for a late pick do you think that might hurt his credibility down the road? (frank)
it's not Bennings job to help a rival. (frank) Dallas and their low ball offer |

Heard Steve Tambolini yesterday, saying owners are often in the mix as trades have many future implications including financial, ie:the owners money.
Tom Galgardi was in the mix on the Dallas side, too.
I don't think it's that unusual for a teams owner to have a say.
I'll go climb under my rock, again. |

Do you really believe Dallas lowballed Benning that badly? I bet after they had Russell they tried to bend him over.
I suspect Benning overplayed his hand so Nill pulled the trigger on Russell. |

I can see it, especially when acquiring salary. However, if you're dealing an expiring contract for prospects/picks then an owner has no business meddling. |

There was a tweet yesterday that said the Canucks raised the price, Dallas matched, the Canucks tried to get more again and thats when Dallas took the Calgary deal. So seems like Benning did what he could if the multiple reports are true |

I think not bringing back Dan could happen but if he wants to resign for a lesser contract than say a sbisa then why not do it ...moving forward you have tanev and Hutton as your better D men for when horvat virtanen etc are becoming the more focal point ...edler will still be a decent option but isn't getting any younger ...after that its pretty thin ...lots of potential options but that's all they are

He also, re-iterated repeatedly, that it is very difficult to move a player with a NTC.
I also don't think Hamhuis helped things by saying he wanted to re-sign with Vancouver in the summer.

All we can do is speculate what the last minute offer was. I'm giving Benning the benefit of the doubt here. During his presser it sounded as if he was offended by their offer. I'm pleased he said no. |
