If that's the expectation .
They have Pedan Biega Sbisa and Larsen to fill that hole. Sing him to a contract May first all is good . - VANTEL

Look at hutton, beat out Corrado and is solid after this season, making a roster on your own merit realy puts a chip on these young guy's shoulders. The dude(lefty) abides. |

As I pointed out last blog, Edler is top 60 in points, for defenceman, even though he had missed a bunch of games. He eats big minutes and is a top 2 player in the nhl. He will be missed big time when he's gone, or do you think that we've been intentionally tanking and not missing him and Sutter? - Pres.cup
I don't think he is going anywhere, and would venture to guess he could leave when the Sedins retire, if he is as shy as has been mentioned by media.
I'm not a big Edler hater, just wish we had a better option for our top pairing, wouldn't mind if he played second pairing at around 22 ish minutes a night. |

Don't pencil Hutton in as first pairing too quick, see where he is at in his 2nd full season, if he has a slump or slow start like Horvat.
Nothing was expected of him and he has over achieved. Next year he might feel the pressure and expectations a bit more.
I'm a Hutton fan, hope he can keep it up, just a lot to put on his shoulders. |

never did (but keep in mind he's been pretty okay the last 5 games playing 25 minutes a night so there's no reason to suggest he cant be a good 2nd pairing guy which is what I figure), but he's definitely guarunteed himself a spot in our top 6. And got that way through his own hard work (and some injuries opening roster spots), not any luck. He's a better defensive option than Edler, that's for sure that's why I have him as our #2, he's just better in our own end, and that's the point of defensemen |

as lefty said, regardless I think it's just to get him signed and moved over here, KHL players are notoriously tricky. I think he'll get whatever position he deserves, regardless of the contract. Be it top 4, or 5/6 or even playing for Utica. Yes, I agree they see something in his game, and really want to get him over here, but I think you;re readign too much into it, to say he'll be playing top 4 next season unless he really earns it. Weber/bart gone, they might just have a bunch of guys battle for 4/5/6/7, unless the make a trade
If contracts are dictating who plays top 4 next year, then it will be Edler/tanev/hutton/sbisa. I wouldnt read too much into the sweet talking from Jb's side to get him over, I think they are just trying very hard to shore up the defensive depth. - Crazybagoham
Well you and Lefty are wrong. Canucks already have enough 5/6/7 guys.
They are trying to get him here so they can audition him for at least 10 games in top 4. If he can fill the spot , then that eases the pressure of having to go out in the summer and making a big move or re-signing Hamhuis.
If they are just going to bring him over to play in Utica or 5/6 Canucks then sign a contract after May first and say see you in training camp. |

perhaps they want to actually evaluate him on their own team? Instead of flying everytime to Russia everytime they want to scout him? Dude it could be just that they want to get him over here... working out on their schedule, with thier trainers, their systems. A real source pls |

Best to sign him and see where he's currently at, if you get him over you get his initial nerves out of the way before new year, he's better prepared that way. Plus he becomes Canuck property if they're able to sign him. |

His play will dictate his minutes, which is true for every player, professional sports is a show-me business. |

He can't go to Utica. Also it's best to get him into the lineup to get some NHL experience, that'll give them, and him, a better look at where he stands, and for him what the smaller ice surface and the speed of the NHL is like. |

You and the other guy are telling me stuff I already know but none of it explains why not just wait until May 1 and see you at Canucks camp.
None of it explains why they are trying to get things done ahead of time

You asked why not sign him May 1st, I told you why I thought they want to sign him now. Wasn't that what you were looking for?
It's to gain NHL experience for him, May 1st the season is over. |

Why do they care if a 5/6 player gets NHL experience and go through all the troubles tying to get him here now.
I know all the excuses you are going to give but to me I don't accept any of the reasons. If I am a GM and he is targeted to be an AHL player or 5/6 I let him follow the proper protocol
There is something about him they like and they are trying to speed up the process.
We can discuss all day but I don't see any NHL GM doing that with a half hearted interest .

Nothing could be further from the truth, he does put up points, if you bothered to look up the facts. Over the past three years he's 59th overall in terms of PPG for defencemen at 0.386.
This year he's 63rd in defensive scoring averaging over 24 minutes of ice-time per night, which is ahead of Boychuk, Kronwall, Daley, Wideman, Hjalmarsson, Maata, Oduya etc.
There's 30 teams, that's two "D" on every team that play as 1/2, 60 players. He's an excellent #3 guy, his minutes are just elevated to the point where the guy makes mental mistakes.
This year he's 19th in total ice-time for defencemen, the guy plays against the other teams top players 5vs5, PP, PK, hard minutes, they rely on him for everything!

Sorry just saw this, I agree with you, he's a good pp players, but certainly not this year. How is he different that Vrbata? Getting all of his points on the powerplay (gifted ice time) and letting more responsible players mke up for him, which is unacceptable for top pairing guy. If he isnt getting like 0.5 Points per game, he's not worth it, he's at 52 gp with 20 points, terrible for an "offensive" d man, that doesnt play both ends. He's -8 with 111 shots on goals... terrible. I know he's been solid over 3 years, but this year his numbers show, same with the tortorella year, when he was asked to play an honest game. I dont like players like Edler/Vrbata that look good on the scoresheet but dont make it up during the year. Edler is a country club player. |
