By your standards half the teams that played yesterday deserved to win and didn't. So what does that say about you "theory of logic concerning advanced stats?" - tomburton99
I don't even know what you're on about. The whole point about advanced stats is that by using them you can make better predictions and analysis than you can by just looking at who won and who lost.
So it seems to me that while you're clearly trying to be obnoxious and argue against me, that all you're doing is telling me why I'm right. I really don't think your posts are making any sense. |

Happens all the time, but if the Kings always play that way they will, over time, have more points than the Ducks.
The Kings totally deserved to win yesterday. They just didn't. - James_Tanner
The Kings have been #1 in Corsi in the league for at least the last three seasons. They consistently out-event the Ducks. Over the last three seasons, the Kings have 2 wins in their last 12 regular season meetings with the Ducks. The Ducks have ended each of those seasons with more points than the Kings. How much time do we need? |

James I wouldn't put much stock in what Steve Simmons says. Pretty sure he just makes this nonsense up. Whenever he needs a negative story about the leafs he creates one. He also suggested that Lou can bend the rules just because he's Lou. Ridiculous. - shack67
While I don't ever agree with the guy, I like that he writes his column every week. I've read him since I was a kid and have probably never missed one of his sunday columns.
I actually find him annoying on TV and I think his opinions are ridiculous, but I think he's a good writer and that he is far less boring than most.
It is not lost on me either that I like Simmons for the same reason a lot of people like me. |

That's an extreme example, but hopefully you're watching the game and can point out that that has occurred.
No one is saying big sample size aren't better or that these kind of things are not common in small sample sizes, but if a guy can use plus/minus - which is crap even in a massive sample size - then I am sure no one is going to be severely mislead by pointing out which team is getting the most shot attempts. - James_Tanner
Henrik Sedin did it last night three times, before he was injured, before heading to the bench, small example but you get what I mean. |

The Kings are the superior team as seen by their superior roster, their better record over the last five or so years and their two Stanley Cups.
Currently, the Kings have the best team in hockey and should be the #1 favorite for the Cup. |

I have openly admitted that the Leafs are my favorite team over 70000 times on here. But Conga should be banned just for being annoying. Not my favorite poster. |

It was a joke. How could anyone not know the origins of the great Jimmy T.
And that Arizona Coyotes fans are the things of Unicorns and the wage gap. |

That's factually wrong. See Washington and the 100 points they have. Kings are great team, but they are not the best team in hockey this year thus far. |

What am I wrong about?
The team who plays the best doesn't always win. In fact, they probably only win about 60 odd percent of the time. Luck is a major major major factor in the outcome of games when teams are evenly matched, which every team in the NHL is. - James_Tanner
Great goaltending isn't luck, it means you've got a fantastic goaltender....Markstrom and the PP won it for an outplayed Canucks team last night. |

That the bounces and random events of luck outweigh shot attempts. |

I think this is the 100th time I've written this on a Tanner blog, I don't know why I continue to bother, but here goes:
Corsi and other advanced stats are helpful for supplemental analysis of the game, a team, and/or individual players. However, they can't be used as a replacement of "simple" stats or other traditional means of evaluating players. To solely look at advanced statistics and say Player A is better than Player B because Corsi is just as bad as saying Player A is better than Player B because plus/minus.
I am a fan of advanced statistics. They are an effective way to bring further insight into an already complicated game. However, hockey is not baseball. You can't just Moneyball your way to Stanley Cups in this game. Using advanced stats as supplemental analysis is incredibly helpful. Using only advanced stats highlights a lack of understanding of how the game is played. |
