Not true...

"A player is awarded a "plus" each time he is on the ice when his Club scores an even-strength or shorthanded goal. He receives a "minus" if he is on the ice for an even-strength or shorthanded goal scored by the opposing Club. The difference in these numbers is considered the player's "plus-minus" statistic."

Wow, never knew that's, thanks for the info.

Here's an article I bookmarked a few years ago (bullfrog will love it as it mentions Edler's terrible plus/minus) http://www.arcticicehocke...worst-statistic-in-hockey

I think it's a pretty good intro of what is wrong with +/-
In addition to this article, +/- also applies to when we have an extra attacker on the ice (how many one goal games have we lost...?) So anyone on the ice during a 6-5 that get's scored on in getting a minus (Brett Burns for example has 7 EN goals against).

+/- is such a ridiculous stat. I can see why one would think it holds so much weight but when developing young talent, such as Bo, one might be more focused on ice time, opponents, line mates, chemistry, etc. I think he has done an absolutely amazing job considering the role he has been thrown into. He doesn't look uncomfortable on the ice.

+/- is also a team wide stat to a certain degree. The defense for Vancouver has been just terrible and when Miller needs to be there sometimes he just (more often than not... ) isn't. How much time did he spend playing with Vrbata? That guy really seemed pissed after not playing with the Sedins anymore and just quit.

The amount of variables there are nowadays is too great to put that much weight into a stat that can be affected negatively even when playing good hockey.

Do I need to add the terrible scheduling the Canucks have? Bo needs more credit in terms development than a disaster season. Give your head a shake.

This means that if a player is on defending a prepay and scores a short handed goal he would get a plus, the team on the powerplay who allowed the shorty would be penile zed with a minus.

Only shorties count not ppg

That makes sense. I'm in a lot of hockey pools with plus minus, so I follow stats more closely.

Do you know what happens with plus minus when a short handed penalty shot is scored?

ya but its misleading. Like was pointed out earlier if its a defensive center that kills lots of penalties then it takes his +/- for a nose dive....if you look at his stats alone it doesnt look good but if you follow the games and they roles hes in then you see what hes doing and why his stats are like that.

Just checking. If a guy is on a short handed breakaway and is tripped... He's awarded a penalty shot. Doesn't do anything to plus minus.

I don't think you are getting it...

If you are killing a penalty and the other team scores, nothing happens with either teams plus minus. However, if you score a short handed goal, then your line get a plus and the other team all get a minus.
