If a guy is on a breakaway, how is the other forward playing defense? And I'd hope that other forward isn't skating backwards.

I think his point is: Why change what we have been doing..

If Sanheim is 2 years away, why Rush it for Trouba who will be making fat cash by then?

We have Ghost, Provorov, Sanheim, Morin, Meyers, and Hagg all projecting to be NHL d-men. Will they all make it? Probably not. Hagg seems the least likely (as of now) to be a top 4 d-man, but a lot can change rather quickly.

- jak521

I understand the "stick to the plan" approach, but it comes down to how much you value Trouba now to what you think Sanheim can be in 2 years. I don't think that Sanheim will be as complete of a player as Trouba, and I think that Ghost and Provorov make Sanheim's skill set the easiest to part with.

The only consideration for me is Trouba's cap hit. If he won't budge from $6M, no way.

At all? As in he'd fall down if he tried to skate backwards?

Wow, I just learned that I can skate backwards better than a HOF hockey player.

- jmatchett383

I'm literally laughing out loud at the notion that forwards can't skate backwards that well...its pretty hilarious.

A dman skates backwards because he is usually (should be) behind the play with the puck moving towards them..Obviously need to face the play. The forwards and typically skating forwards to their assignments. If the play gets behind the dmen, the dmen don't start skating backwards haha its a matter of positioning not because dmen can only skate backwards well and not forwards

This argument is the equivalent of me saying the flyers could use a player who specializes in the shootout and you basically assuming a shootout specialist is in capable of doing anything else...

First of all, i didn't know him being 3 years older made him a senior citizen. Second of all, IF Sanheim ends up being as good or better, he will be making that money anyway when it comes time to reup after his ELC. I can't be sure Sanheim won't be better but you can only look at how Trouba is a legit top 2-4 guy and Sanheim is a project that we can't project easily. IF Sanheim ends up better, the margin between the two would likely still be low unless Sanheim becomes Doughty or something.
- orangekrush2010

I will say this up front...if you are trying to make this a Sanheim for Trouba discussion this is pointless. I am not arguing with that because it is not a trade anyone with Trouba makes. Pointless to talk about.

In regards to what I believe it will actually take to add to Sanheim to get Trouba, no I am not making that trade. The Flyers do need some RH shot defensemen, but I do not believe you solve that problem by trading prospects. In fact, I dont think any problem of the Flyers is solved by trading prospects.

The path that Hextall has started them on is what I believe to be the correct one. This is not one where they add a couple prospects and then start trading them to make their current team good. It is a long term project that will be on going. Until rules change in the NHL...the best way to acquire top end talent is through the draft, which means the Flyers should be drafting and hitting on prospects and if necessary, trading them when their value is highest (i.e. good player but not a fit or unable to pay them)

Yes, the Flyers have back end prospect talent and lack high end forward prospects, but guess what? It has proven to take defensemen longer to develop on average than forwards. We build up the forward prospects as the defense matures to form a solid core that will hopefully peak at the same time. As much as it sucks to admit, the current core of Jake, G, Mase, etc are probably not the ones that are being built around. It will be nice if prospects come in and hit the ground running like Ghost, but if the Flyers stay the course the success will continue post giroux/jake

It's also natural for the defense to skate backwards and defend. This isn't the case for most forwards.

So....what about Sami Kapanen and Sergei Fedorov? They both switched from forward to defense (Fedorov for most of a full season) when needed. They seemed totally capable of skating backwards and defending? Did they magically gain this ability when they decided to play defense, or did they possess the ability when they were forwards? Because based on what you've been telling me, forwards are bad at skating backwards and defending.

exactly. being able to play good defense is not synonymous with being able to skate backwards lol

Absolutely not, in fact you should sleep right up until you need to leave for the game so you're well rested.

Is Jake known as a defensive forward or ever in the running for the Selke?

I think it was a fair argument that got out of control. It seems pretty obvious that the team would be at a defensive disadvantage with Jake switching spots with Ghost on the PP. The reason I suggested Ghost move to Jake's spot is only because that spot is currently being occupied by Streit.

RE: Sami,

I forget where I read it (it might have been Bill), but I vaguely recall reading something about Finnish players that said that at a young age, they made players try all sorts of different forward and defensive positions at a young age so that it could inform them in their play when they play their given position.

Then again, I could have imagined I read this.
