Yeah, the penguins undoing is not the contracts for Malkin and Crosby and others. They actually have a pretty decent supporting cast for them. They just emptied their cupboard to go for it while they have those two and have underperformed despite going for it and have faced injury issues.
- orangekrush2010

Its not Crosby and Malkin, you pay those guys all day long. Throw Letang in that group.

They get burned when they pay Kessel 6.8 and Fleury 5.75. I like the Hornqvist deal for what its worth.

They are a trash fire.

If we could sign Stamkos to a 5-6 year deal and gave him what he wanted, it likely wouldnt pose an issue and would probably be perfect. Takes him until 32 where he can squeeze another good contract out of someone if he still has it. Around that time we'll probably be dealing with needing to hand out larger contracts to our d guys
- orangekrush2010

I don't know 5-6 years of having $18-$20M tied up on 2 centers with Jake's extension and having to resign Simmonds is not my ideal situation. I understand it can work, but I'd rather see if Konecny can be that 2C.

Doubt Stamkos even considers a 5-6 year deal. If he does you are paying 10 million a year.

Nobody should get more than G.

It also hasn't helped that Letang can't stay healthy.

well my point is its not like they couldn't afford to bring in a decent-good supporting cast for them. They are just really underachieving as a team. A lot of people thought they would be much better than what they have been this year.

Has there been any further news about the Pens being sold?

I thought at one point, Mario and the other guy (Burkle?) had the team on the market or a pct of the team on the market.

I wonder how much of the day to day operations Mario interjects himself into (for better or worse).

Ya never know. He just might.

and you can't compare a contract that was given out a few years ago to one today, given new measuring stick contracts out these days. It's based on the market, not by past deals you've handed out

This was my hot take and now everyone is jumping on board and giving nutter credit for the idea.

Wasn`t it Mario who cried about injuries when the team chose to employ Cooke ?

They have been whiners ever since Crosby joined them. Maybe even before. Nobody even cares about the Penguins anymore, and if they do, its only to mock them. Thats the result when the league shoves Pittsburgh down everyones throats for years.

Irrelevant.

I was at the WBS-LHV game on Friday. I got nice and drunk so I can't offer that much insight, but it was fun to see the prospects in action. Leier looked like the only guy on the ice trying to score. Morin just has such a long reach. He didn't impress me defensively, but I also saw him up the ice more than I expected to. Hagg looked like the best player for the Phantoms to me. Alt looked good as well

No thanks on Stamkos. Overrated for the money he'll get at ES and wouldn't even be able to utilize him on the PP because he and Giroux like to play in the same spot.

Classic case of NMC on bad contracts coming back to bite them. Score another point for Team Buyoutberger
- YuenglingJagr

They may as well leave him in the press box for the rest of the season to avoid any injury that would get in the way of a June buyout.

Toronto will offer him 7 x 11. We can't compete with that, nor should we.

I don't get the fear of signing Stamkos. This isn't a player in their 30's on the other side of the hill. Also this team will start to be on the upswing starting next year and especially in 17-18 and 18-19. Lastly I don't see FA of his skill hitting the market in the future. It rarely happens now that superstars go to FA. Aloe we have a few years until the deal of Simmonds is up. He will be 30 when he hits FA. Who knows with his game if he will be resigned at that time.

I want him gone. Dont care if its a buyout. The contract spot alone.

Yeah, when you have a player like Stamkos hit free agency you need to try...like you said, players of his calibre rarely hit free agency these days. It he wants to chase the ridiculous contract Toronto might or might not give him, by all means step aside. But you at least try.

I don't get why people think we have a shot at Stamkos when there are other teams with much more cap space and an open spot at 1C. Once the Flyers sign Schenn and Gudas there will be very little cap space left.

Why would Stamkos even leave an extra year on the table to come to Philly over staying in Tampa?

Because good coaches don't find ways to use their players? Last night Filpula was where Giroux was on the first PP with Stamkos in Voracek's spot.

Also he could play on a 2nd unit with Konecny and couturier and Provorov to add another strong PP unit.

I feel like people on this board would come up with a reason not to go for (insert any star player here) to make our team better and would rather roll with what we have on our team and in our prospect pool

I feel like you should look at Flyers page on a salary cap site, and the contracts Kane and Toews and Kopitar got. That's what Stamkos will be after.

Well he hasnt resigned in TBay to date, so just maybe he wont....

I agree with those who want to at least want to consider signing him.
Stamkos is not like the Vinny disaster, he is still just 26, has scored 2nd most goals to Ovie since in the league

I too think he could be fit in by Hak..... can a team ever have too many great players ?
As we all know the Cap is never a problem for the Flyers, havent we been schooled on that subject
