Also, I don't see a huge difference in talent level with Giroux and Stamkos either. Which would be why it would be nasty to have both. Giroux is one of the best centers in the game. - orangekrush2010

Voracek was not in for the two best games of the season. Something something team better without him. - Mononoke
Well remember, the Flyers have a better record when Giroux plays fewer minutes. |

Cool. Sign Stamkos to $12M for 7 years and have fun dealing with extensions kicking in for all of your defenseman and young wingers in that span. Done arguing this because it's not going to happen anyway. - jmatchett383
Can certainly be done. It is likely that not all of Sanheim, Morin, Provorov will pan out. The ones that do may take years to hit the point where they're making big money. Same thing for our young wingers. How long did it take Voracek, Simmonds and (still in the process) Schenn to get to this point? Its going to take time for these guys to develop. |

Crosby could have asked for the league max (roughly $14M at the time) and gotten it. - jmatchett383
I agree. I still find it silly knowing Malkin making more than Crosby, but then again Russians rarely take discounts. |

The cap is actually projected to go down.
MacDonald would require a first rounder to move. His contract is so bad I can't see anyone taking it on while the cap goes down without a significant asset.
Moving Streit, Schultz and Read and buying out Umberger clears about $12-13M, but they all need to be replaced. Gudas and Schenn need to be re-signed too. Konecny and Provorov can fill in for cheap, but they still cost about $1M or more depending on bonuses reached.
It's really just not realistic unless they want to gut the team. - PhillySportsGuy
I don't think it would require a first round pick if you are retaining the max amount allowed (50%?). |

Yeah, but that only opens up $2.5M. If they want to get Stamkos AND fill out the roster with competent players, they'd need to move the whole thing. |

Their money increases incrementally. It's not like they stay on their ELCs until they turn 27. |

Right but they're also not going to go from their ELC to 5-7 mill a year. All the while, other contracts will have expired. |

Stamkos will sign on the cheap to be a Flyer. I heard him on the Fan 590 the other day, saying it was always his dream to play for the Flyers...... |

Yes, but guys like Schenn and MDZ are now due to be paid. Also, going 1-2 years at a time with young players is risky because you're going to end up paying them a ton later on. They won't be able to work out deals like Simmonds' or Couturier's where they pay a little more up front in order to save big on the back end. |

can be equally as risky as paying long term early on. |

Not really. You're paying more up front to make the contract much more palatable on the back end. It's rare that a deal like this backfires. |
