Hey folks, just wrote a story, sort of like I've done when bringing up how the team is doing compared to last season (and then the last time I did it, I compared it to the 11/12 team). Rather than plopping as much as I wrote for it in here, I put it up as a MyHockeyBuzz post. Would appreciate the read and comments:
http://my.hockeybuzz.com/...st_id=17350&user_id=46367
Edit: keep in mind, comments on that part of the site are kind of crappy, they're character limited to something ridiculously small compared to the lack of limit here. - stashu
But were those teams any good 5 on 5 . Just kidding . Very good analysis. |

If it will be close then it wouldn't be a top 5 pick. - CoHo_to_B-Lo
right, i think the assumption is we'll pick top 5 this year.
Next season, we'll be much closer to the playoffs.....i thought that evident from my comment, no? |

We are not gonna be top 5 this year either. If we get a #1D that is proven i take it all day every day and as some say.... twice on sunday. - CoHo_to_B-Lo
Ok, but for what in exchange?
There's no way anyone trades a true OEL type #1D for a 1st, even 2 1st might not cut it.
And i gotta say, I'd be real hesitant about trading multiple 1st round picks given the stage of our rebuild. The core of this team largely HAS to come from the draft, that's the only way you can build a successful and LONG LASTING team with the salary cap. Doing it through trades and FA signings is very risky because you don't have the benefit of 3 years of entry level and 7 years as an RFA.
If we think we've settle on our core (Risto, Jack, Reinhart,Lehner, maybe even McCabe) then trading 1st probably isn't as much of a risk......but if we're not, and i think we're still missing one prospect piece, then i think we're getting a bit ahead of ourselves. |

The ones I was with were good guys. Talked about the tank and how the Toronto media is bullpoop. Heard that the announcers were ripping on Eichel and talking about how their rookie was better and we all had a good laugh about it.
Another observation, ACC is a nice arena but it's not designed well acoustically. Much of the game the crowd sounded very quiet and you could hardly heard anything on the ice. Big hits and pucks hitting the boards weren't as loud as some arenas I've been to |

That's my big thing as well. Now, to get that big piece I'm fine with trading picks. I'm fine with trading prospects and picks and players to get a defenseman that we can rely on for years to come. I just get concerned when we look in the pipeline and don't have a guy who I see and say "When that kid is ready he's going to be great". If you can have your stars playing well and then a rookie or 2 in your bottom 6 that cost 500k-1M getting sheltered minutes and still putting up goals it can really help. I look at the 05-06 team for that example. Chicago does that as well I believe. |

You need to look at who we've been winning against
Going back to mid January, and with the exception of San Jose, ALL of our wins have been against teams in the lower half of the standings.
We just lost to Edmonton and nearly to TO, yeah we've made strides, but we're only a 3 game losing streak from being back in the bottom 3.
I'm not saying that it will happen, just that I'm definitely not as confident as you that it won't happen. |

Too*
And I'm still not sure what the joke is.
The Sabres being bad 5 on 5 is an absolute fact.
Whether the power play is as important or not was the "argument"
An actual joke that would make sense would be asking if those teams had a good PP or not. |

Not time to make a splash in my opinion, and that's just me. I look and see that we're in 23rd place whereas last year we were in 30th. We have 160 GF and 181 GA. That's without Lehner for a good majority of the year, with Sam and Jack being rookies, with players who had never played together, and a new coach. Not to mention that your top 2 scorers from last year, Ennis (46) and Moulson (41) have 27 points between them.
I'm good with moving forward with this core and building around it. If you find a top 4 d-man and it doesn't cost that 1st or any of the core then sure make the team better. Sign a couple of free agents, make your best push for Stamkos, but if this is basically my 2016-17 team I'll take it and we'll see where it goes. - Zschalberg
Disagree. There is no core. You have four players on offense who are apart of the future of this team. Kane, O'Riley, Eichel and Reinhart. Everyone else is pieces to move. |

If the Sabres did win the lottery, would you trade down to 2-4 to take a winger or d? Say Toronto is picking 3rd an offered the 3rd and their other 1st? Or Arizona is 3rd and there is a move like the 3rd and Michael Stone for the 1st.
On the other hand if we are picking 8-12 what would we have to include to move up to 2-5. Larson, Psysyk, Foligno?
Regardless of what happens, the Sabres will not go into day 1 without a pick having it here in Buffalo. - adambuffalo
Plus every draft pick we have this year.

Went to the game last night and I will say the Leafs fans there were very nice. Compared to Montreal they talked to me, joked with me, were generally good guys. Of course they cheered in my face each time they scored but that's to be expected. The Leafs fans that come to Buffalo give them a bad name but I was impressed. - Zschalberg

The way we are playing we will be (10-12). We can't stop getting points and ROR will be back soon. |
