Isn't that why the lightning changed their jerseys? To match the leafs and confuse stamkos to resign?
- j.boyd919

And here I was thinking that they changed their jerseys because of an internal bet about how many times they could make me vomit watching a Lightning game

Alright I read enough garbage on one thread for today, First off IF Stamkos does not stay in TB it will be one of the four teams that he will sign with.
I don't think he will stay in TB, allot more going o in that dressing room the we will ever know

1) Toronto, Yes he would love to Play in Toronto, he will be a God in TO, He will make more $$ here then any other team with endorsements . I'm Sure Toronto will take a run at him for 10.5 Plus to land him. The problem I see with this is Shanny I feel does not like 7 year deals. Another issue is this , Does he really want to go thru 3-5 years of a rebuild. Babcock is a major advantage for players that want to win, he is a world class coach and players know he will make them a better player. The Team WILL be built around Stammers and that is BIG factor for him

2) Buffalo...yea nobody wants to play in Buffalo, not when your a die hard leaf fan like Stamkos. They might be a little further ahead the TO in the rebuild, but allot of you are forgetting the amount of picks we have in the next 2 years. The leafs will be ahead of Buffalo by far in the next two years.Lets be honest here Buffalo is the arm pit of the world and given a choice he WILL not play there

3) Montreal , Yes PK is there, Yes he and PK are great friends, with that being said its not likely he will. I do think they could free up the cap space to get him, but they are not a contender and wont be for a long while, No real advantage in going to the Habs.

4) Detroit , This is a very good possibility , he does want to play in a major franchise city, Michigan does have some first rate places to live, Ken Holland is a class act. They are a hard competing team and the fans are behind the team.

ehhhhhhh.... I dunno, I kind of agree with him on the endorsement part... he will be filthy (frank)ing rich with the endorsements up there.
- j.boyd919

He already is top 3 in endorsements. He made about 7.5 mill last year in endorsements which is 3rd highest among players. He already has national deals with Nike, Bauer, tissot etc. He doesn't stand to gain much more from moving to Toronto. He will not overtake Crosby and McDavid will soon pass him. You guys overestimate the endorsement appeal. And his taxes will jump 14% in Ontario vs Tampa. That's a lot of dough to throw away.

I actually hope Toronto signs him to a max deal. They would regret it.

The lack of a real interest for hockey in Toronto means that in a better hockey market like Montreal he'd be paid a lot higher, IMHO tbh.

8.5 mil in tampa equals out to a Toronto contract of 11 mil in take home
- j.boyd919

I profess to know nothing about the tax rate in Canada, though I assume it is high. As for the tax effect of say, TB vs. BUF, it's not as big as you'd think. Professional athletes pay state taxes based on where they play the actual games. With 50% of Stamkos's games away, he'd pay taxes to those states for those games. So if the State tax rate is 6% in NY (not sure what it is as I live in CT), the overall tax difference would be approximately half of that or 3%. If you take into account that the cost of living is probably slightly less in BUF than TB, then overall, the pure money difference may be close to zero. Therefore, all things being even (which they may not be) it comes down to the cities - does he want to stay in TB or be closer to home in BUF?

there are tax planning strategies or salary cap avenues that can be explored to lessen the impact.

the easiest solution for the leafs to offer a competitive contract to TB is to offer stamkos a bonus heavy contract (that presumably TB won't be able to match) to avoid a big chunk of the 17% or so escrow.

Good Point. But your forgetting one thing....HE wont play there. Its too close to the Team he would Ideally like to be in and that's Toronto. These players have way better accountants then the average guy and those bean counters can work Miracles.....
