Is Panarin eligible for rookie of the year? Gretzky was not as he had played a year of professional hockey in the WHL. Panarin is 24 and has played multiple years in the KHL, which is also a professional league. Have rules changes since then? I believe McDavid should be rookie of the year anyways. Amazing what he's doing in this league. It's no longer a high scoring league and he's putting up over a point a game at 18/19 years old! |

They do have a new GM and coach . Good ones . Now they need to change the core as some of these players need a change of scenery. - Maximum Signal
Chirelli (sorry Sp?) is good but Boston even showed that once you are at the top you don't have very long to flounder around to try to stay there... Oilers are a completely different puzzle and it will be interesting to see if he can piece it together.
McLellan on the other hand i was never a fan of and felt like he fumbled a great team in San Jose... They are still pretty securely in a playoff spot without him which is where i feel they'd be with him true test comes playoff time |

not sure if this is a real post. anyways- you have to be younger than 26 on sept 15th of your rookie season. panarin is eligible. i would rank it mcdavid, ghost, panarin, then everybody else. panarin is having an incredible year, but im still taking points off for being 24 and playing with kane. |

Chicago is going to be in some serious cap issues next season. 15 players signed @ 64 mil and Panarin's deal is for the rookie max with performance bonuses. Meaning they'll be more in the 66 mil range. |

I think they have someone else with bonuses too...they're gonna be in some bad shape, but they'll likely just fill with scrubs and probably find someone to (finally) take on Bickell. |

I think it's actually debatable that they are doing this on purpose. - fastek
I took that standpoint for the past few years thinking that Edmonton's management has just been incompetent, but I can't hold on to that viewpoint any longer. I never seen a team in the history of sports amass a plethora of offensive talent and yet refuse to address the defensive side of the sport. Plenty of top-notch defensemen have been traded in the past 3 years and Edmonton, and lord knows has had the currency to land some of them, yet nothing to land some of them. Maybe I'm wrong, but if Edmonton gets a top 3 pick in this draft and doesn't trade it for defensive help choosing to select another offensive player, than undoubtedly right. |

12/7/15:
The NHL's salary cap for the 2016-17 season could go up approximately $3 million, Commissioner Gary Bettman said at the Board of Governors meeting on Monday.
The salary cap for the 2015-16 season is $71.4 million. It increased $2.4 million from 2014-15 to 2015-16.
"We gave them a very, very, very rough projection on what the cap could conceivably be next season, which will be somewhere between where it is now and up $3 million, in that range," Commissioner Bettman said. "That will depend on a variety of factors."
Among the factors that could come into play are the accuracy of the preliminary reports, the value of the Canadian dollar and the possibility of the NHL Players' Association initiating its five percent escalator to further raise the cap. |

Interesting. I had heard, and perhaps it was longer ago than this, that it could either stay where it was or even decline. If the cap does go up 3 I'd be even more inclined to go for a particular free agent. |

I was shocked too. Definitely makes a Stamkos signing more palatable, as well as "decreases" the cost of O'Reilly. |

It seems like that organization has the Darcy Regier disease regarding its forward talent. Apparently NO return is good enough for Hall, Nugent-Hopkins, or Eberle. No matter how much losing they do, they refuse to part with any of them. It would be interesting to see how those guys perform with a change in scenery.
