Without bothering to watch the link, I assume they're debating on disqualifying the previous years first overall winner from having another shot at it

essentually you won't have the league concerned that we're gonna get it again as they are right now

Tell one of those gms to make us a worthwhile fuking offer and we'll trade it!
Lowball and try and take advantage and we won't. Simple as that.

I didn't see chiarellis facial expressions, but judging by his words he understood the leagues fears, but he was also a little annoyed.
To paraphrase
"This doesn't happen if we didn't win Connor last year"

You just know he's on the hot seat while these discussions are going on and is probably deferential to any and all suggestions. Can't win it twice in a row?-"sure! Whatever u guys think is fair!"
Move the previous winner outside top 5?" sure! That sounds good too!"
Etc etc

They haven't even helped us. We're still in 29th place. I hope we do win the lottery and get the 1st overall again just to see all the idiots lose their minds.

If the Devils don't win the lotto I'm rooting for Edmonton. Keeps Matthews out west and the entertainment value of Toronto losing their minds is a plus.

Ah. I can see both sides. I don't think Naylor is wrong for wanting that kind of rule. It makes sense to spread the wealth of those extraordinary talents more evenly through the worst teams, but his argument is flawed by his perspective (only really using the McDavid pick as basis).

I wouldn't have a problem adding the rule, but has it really hurt any of the other teams (excluding the McDavid pick) to not have had the 1st overall pick? Boston got Seguin, Avs got Landeskog, BJs got Murray, and Buffalo got Eichel. In MOST drafts, the difference in talent and ceiling between #1 and #2 or #3 is often minimal.

Man, Dalton Prout has quickly sky-rocketed up the list of dirty pieces of trash in the league this season.

I think his argument is purely based on his own bias

I don't care whether the oilers get it or not. I'd like to trade it.

But the fact remains that the point of the draft is to help bad teams. Whether you falsely believe that those picks should've done so by now or not isn't even the point. We're still a bottom feeder. So if the draft is set to help bad teams, we absolutely should be included. In fact, I think winning it on two occasions in particular may have handcuffed us abit.

Furthermore, the odds were heavily heavily stacked against us. Every time. There's no conspiracy, or actually be any truth to the jokes we make here about being good at winning the lottery. But somehow they've evolved into some sort of truth. Winning it once is lucky, but 4 times!!?
We defied odds and somehow got lucky. Making a rule against something that was so infinitesimal is pretty silly

I'm gonna isolate this paragraph as this is the root of the argument.

It's not as though we're being cut out of the draft or even the top-5, we're just not in the draw for the 1st overall. Whether that pick yields a substantially greater player or not varies based off the year, but the fact remains the 1st overall pick is far more often than not a franchise-level player and perhaps it's prudent to set measures in place to stop those sorts of players to go to the same team in consecutive years.

Just because it's very VERY unlikely to happen again doesn't mean they shouldn't take steps to avoid it.
