An Amateur Try Out (ATO) is found in the NHL, the AHL, and the ECHL. This type of contract is for players who are leaving college and attempting to turn professional, are done with college, or are graduating from the junior leagues. An ATO is a very common practice near the end of the professional seasons as they go deeper into the year than college or junior schedules. A recent use of this in the NHL was on December 16, 2010, when the Phoenix Coyotes signed Tom Fenton to a one game amateur contract. Another use of an ATO was when the Minnesota Wild signed 51-year-old Paul Deutsch[5] on November 23, 2011.[6] Deutsch was signed because the Wild were unsure their minor league goalie, Matt Hackett, would arrive in time for the game. Deutsch wore number 33 and only participated in warm ups, as Hackett arrived just before the game started. Deutsch said the last time he played organized hockey was in 1978 as a defenseman on his junior varsity high school hockey team. He first played goalie at the age of 37 in a "beer league" in Minnesota.[7]
Ryan Vinz was an ATO so he could play in the NHL under it. However, would it burn a year for the expansion draft? I'd say yes. So that begs the question do we sign him at all this year? |

So I was reading the older thread and if the Expansion occurs in the next two years (not sure when they are projecting it may occur) who gets screwed the most, besides the Sabres of course? I mean, I know you can protect 7 forwards, 3 Dmen and 1 goalie or 8 skaters and a goalie, but what about those with NTC and NMC?
They shouldn't count against that number, as I'm sure Gm's would have factored that into the contract negotiations if they knew expansion was on the horizon. If they do count, I'd assume TM would buy out someone like moulson to drop him from the roster so he wouldn't eat up a valuable spot.
First and second year players are safe, but if it occurs after next season, Eichel & Reinhart would no longer be protected correct?

Correct. Still waiting on the ruling regarding NYC and NMC. |

No one is sure of what will happen with NTC/NMC. Many feel they would be automatically protected while others think they would be a separate category. Until the NHL comes out and says one way or the other no one knows anything.
Good call on Moulson, though. If he would take up a spot either a trade (if he waived) or a buyout would be a possibility, albeit at a cost of course.
And yes, Sam and Eichel would be eligible. |

Yes, after two full years in the NHL, the player is not exempt anymore and must be protected.

Asked Kris Baker if an ATO would count as 1 year of a pro for the expansion draft and his response was "ATO does not start meter on contract". Seems like he thinks ATO wouldn't count as 1 year of pro.
It would make sense if they based it on years of RFA left. We'll see. |

Any word on when they expect the expansion to occur? I'd hate to see anyone like bailey or the new kid Fasching have to be protected or traded in order not to lose them for nothing. (Bailey is in his 1st year technically I believe and if they sign and play Fashcing this year, would eat up a year as well so if the expansion occurred after next year, they'd both be ending their second season)
If all the pieces fall into place and it occurs after next season, there could be some real concerns as:
Eichel
Samson
ROR
Kane
Fasching
Bailey
Would fill 6 of the 7 protected if I get a feeling fro Tm's preferences. He seems to like those kids. Of course ennis and Zemgus could make the list but, what if we land the pipe dream of Stamkos or another excellent offseason pickup? They fill out the seventh spot obviously, assuming we don't trade one of the above to land a forward or number 1 Dman.
Sabres are finally building up a great roster and they may be looking to have to trade a few pieces in order simply not lose out on having one or more players being lost for nothing in return. NMC and NTC would be a real punch in the gut and would force a GM to buy them out in order to be safe. I think moulson, gioanta and gorges are the only ones with NTC (could be wrong) so it might not be a big deal. |

Returned to my hockey sim game (out of beta now and on Steam - PM me if you want any info!), so thought I'd post here with my latest update (February 2016 simmed).
Come follow along, ask any questions, etc in that thread, and just have fun if you like this sort of thing.
As a tease, I was able to acquire Mantha from the Red Wings - future line of Reinhart-Eichel-Mantha is gonna be all set!

2016-17 offseason. Then likely the year after as well from what I've heard.
Also, look for trades to happen to have teams not pick players they might want to protect. It'll be fun and you won't lose your core. |

Geez, that's a tough situation to be in for TM. I'd imagine once the season starts next year, they'll have an idea who they want, but you have to wonder what happens at next year's trade deadline. Larsson, foligno, Deslauriers, catenacci (assuming they are all sabres still), not to mention someone like ennis or an off season acquisition we pickup this year, may draw some interest from an expansion team. Would TM consider trading them to get something rather than gamble and have them taken for nothing? Tough spot indeed. |

Perhaps. You might also see something like Buffalo trades Foligno and a 3rd round pick to LV so that they don't take Fasching or something like that. |

I think it will be some sort of trade as well from the way murray is. Bailey, Ullmark, etc. all those guys will be eligible. Murray seems like he always has to know whats going on and i would imagine Foligno or Pysyk or something would be traded to make sure we don't lose a "future" plan guy. |

I would imagine that we will sign him soon, we burn a year of his ELC but if we wait for him to play his senior yeat he can only sign a 2 year deal anyway. So its the same thing. Only thing that matters is if it counts as an entire "pro year" for the expansion.

I read somewhere they need to announce it before the Draft this year in order to get another team for the next season. The owners haven't voted for it yet. So still some work to be done |

Why take the risk that the year would count?
For the handful of games he'd play...
I just don't think it's worth it |

I tend to agree. Bring him to Buffalo, maybe sign him and let him practice (would that be considered playing pro? He's not "playing".) Or just have him in Buffalo and working with the coaches. If we can guarantee that year doesn't count then sure. Otherwise, it's not a huge reward for the added risk. |

Could be a big nothing. We'll see. I'm cool with keeping it at 30 teams. Relocation, not expansion. |

I think we've gotta wait to sign him,
Just to be safe
Another thing to consider is that bc he wouldn't need to be "protected" that it would up his trade value...
Especially to a team like Anaheim who won't be able to protect their 5 good, young defensemen
Not that I want to trade Fasching per say,
But this is just one more thing that makes him a more desirable trade piece as opposed to Ennis or Girgensons

Here's a fun article about why the Leafs are better at rebuilding than the Sabres. Spoiler: It's not very convincing.

These Toronto morons love to attack Garth for being a bit of a Homer, but than they go and support delusional garbage like this. There is not a hockey fan in the world that would trade Eichel and Reinhart for Nylander and Marner. |

I don't see why they're comparing the two. We're the smaller city, right? We're the ones that are supposed to be living in the shadow and have the inferiority complex, right?
The only point that made Toronto look better than Buffalo in the article was "The Marlies are in 1st place and the Amerks aren't". Sure. Because if we had Eichel and Reinhart in Rochester they'd be doing a bit better too.
I don't care that Toronto is rebuilding. Good for them. I'll care in a few years when we're both trying to make the playoffs.
"Toronto should be better at rebuilding seeing as they've been doing it for the last 15 years" -Some guy on twitter |
