I'm really hoping that Fasching turns out to be the fearless net front presence that screens goalies and scores on deflections. We've got a lot of finesse talent now, but we could sure use a gritty, physical talent to mesh with the eichels and reinharts. - Deuce81

Agreed but at the end of the day, I would rather have to protect him then not have him at all at the end of next year - Stripes77
Sure...
But what if we just signed him a month from now instead of today?
Unless Fasching was demanding to play this season, I don't think him playing in a handful of game outweighs the risk that we could end up losing another player we like
Another interesting thing about the expansion draft...
U could see a pretty nice free agent market occur
Teams will be much less likely to extend certain players, bc they'd then have to protect them
Should make the pool of free agents much more desirable in the year we have the expansion draft
Another reason to NOT overspend on a guy like McGinn, Okposo, Yandle, etc this year IMO |

That and you could look at it as a potential bargaining chip as well. Now he only has two full seasons to get used to the pro game and put up enough points to earn his first big contract. - Pegullaville
I saw similar logic on the Leafs thread regarding Nylander. I wonder if any of those same folks will come here and bag on us now.
Fasching's OT wrister that got Minny into the tourney was a laser...on YouTube, sorry no link. |

Me thinks his agent was pushing him to sign.
If I was an agent I would be giving him the same advice...sign now you are closer to becoming a UFA in the NHL. Or if they don't sign go back to school and become a free agent and pick what team you want to play for.
It has happened a lot recently. Getting him in Buffalo now was pretty important. Him not qualifying for the NCAA tournament might have screwed Buffalo... |

Wow...
Does he & Pommer have NMC clauses?
I bet Minny would love if Vegas snatched one of those contracts away
Been a rough season for those two |

5 NMCs on the Wild, including the 2 ex-Sabres. |

I still remember a play last year where he fanned on a shot and took a tripping penalty without taking a stride. I laughed pretty hard. |

I guess I could see that...
But would a few weeks really make a difference?
If it's a $$$ thing, just bump up his bonus a little to make up for him not playing a handful of games this year
Normally I wouldn't care at all
It's just with the expansion draft looming that u need to consider the affect of signing him now, versus in a month
Of course we don't want to lose Fasching...
But do we want to lose the player who we have to leave unprotected now?
I just feel like there's a way we've could've done right by Fasching, AND done what's best for the organization at the same time |

The Ducks are gonna have some issues
They'll have 5-6 defensemen they'd potentially wanna protect that'll be 25 & under
They almost have to trade at least 1 or 2 of them
Seems almost inevitable they're gonna lose a defenseman |

I wouldn't worry too much about the expansion draft yet. Too many issues not cleared yet.
Stay tuned, this is just the beginning of a very interesting process. If, of course, the NHL does indeed expand.
Bettman said again Wednesday that the issue still hasn't been decided. The league awaits the official recommendation from the 10-owner executive committee regarding expansion, and there's no firm timeline for when that might be ready.
The only deadline to speak of is that if no decision has been reached by the June draft, any expansion team would be unable to begin play in time for the 2017-18 season.

It just pushes Moulson to being unprotected more and more...
Looks like he signed a max contract for a rookie.
The agent did his job. Got him the most money the soonest, also he knows if his client has a good NHL career he is up for a bigger pay day sooner...
I understand the uncertainty with expansion but I don't foresee it to be a big issue. The top 6 players are going to be protected regardless. |

This isnt really true... If we waited he could of only got a 2 year max deal so same year he would be a FA. No sooner or later by signing him now. He gets a 3 year now. Or a 2 year next year. |

So he would have had to wait a full year to get paid for 2 years...now he is getting paid the rest of this year and 2 more years...
So to break it down:
Pro rated max contract the rest of this year
max ELC next season
max ELC the season after
or:
No money this year
max ELC next season
max elc the season after
He indeed got him the most money...not to mention what happens if he gets injured next year playing college??
Also if he would have waiting until the offseason he still would be signed for 3 years...thus waiting another season to becoming a UFA...
His agent was smart. |

I misread what you were saying i agree he got the most money right now. And the kid deserves it. I thought you meant he would get his first "real" contract sooner.
I love the sigining just for the fact that the kid can help support his family and take care of his siblings now. I think the motivation of that alone is going to be HUGE. |

Moulson isn't the issue
He'll be unprotected no matter what
What it would come down to is leaving a guy like Bailey, Ennis or Girgensons unprotected
Is it a HUGE deal? Probably not
But of course we'd like to have that extra slot available if possible |

I think you're worried about that for nothing
Obviously we'll never know,
But there's nothing to suggest that if he's willing to sign now he'd change in mind in 3 weeks |
