Edit: leafs have a pretty tough schedule ahead. Edmonton plays Vancouver twice and Calgary once. They should at least bring a couple to ot, hopefully win 2 of the 4.
If leafs fall to the 5 spot in this year's draft, they should trade down to 7 or 8. I think the top 4 is set in stone, but 5 to 9 seems to be up in the air. If they view them all the same, might as well pick up an extra asset in the process. |

Edmonton will likely pick top 3 for the 6th time in 8 years... The draft lottery is just as pathetic as the Oilers! |

LOCK OF THE WEEK
Leafs do just enough to fall out of 30th and select the smallest, least physical player they can find at number 5.

But they will take the guy with the most skill and I'd take skill over "truculence" any day. Especially at the high end of the first round. |

You always take the high end skill. With that said... Tkachuk, Laine, McLeod and Chychurn are all physical players projected to go in the top 10. The likelihood of drafting a small player with their pick is slim considering of all the players projected to go in the top 10 only Clayton Keller is under 6 foot.
Matthews - 6'1"
Laine - 6'4"
Puljujarvi - 6'3"
Tkachuk - 6'1"
Chychrun - 6'2"
Juolevi - 6'2"
Dubois - 6'1"
McLeod - 6'2"
Nylander - 6'0"
So if by selecting the smallest, least physical player you mean trading down and drafting Nylander at 7-10, then I'm perfectly fine with that. |

The curious case for Defense. Assuming we take a forward with our own pick (likely top 5). Who would you take with the Penguins pick?
I'm hoping for one of Bean, Fabbro, McAvoy.
Thoughts?
I really like Fabbro's game, although Bean seems to be ranked higher by most scouts. |

I imagine Carolina loves the idea of having Nylander. If we fall to 5-7 I say trade down with Canes who I think will be 10th. Canes 1st (9-12th pick), Kings 1st (early to mid 20s) and Canes 2nd round pick (40ish overall)? That would give us 10th, 16th, 25th, 35th, 40th, 55th (all estimated obviously) and that's just rounds 1 + 2. I think given the defensive depth in the top-20 we should use Pittsburgh and our own 1st to take defensemen.
At 10 take Sergachev (defensively responsible, loves to finish checks, hard shot - Riellys archilles heel?)
With Pens pick if unable to trade for young goalie/defenseman draft Bean or if Rubstov/Bellows is available take that I guess. Kings pick would be very interesting to see what happens.

End the draft with first rounders Sergachev (10), Tufte (18), Logan Brown (25)
People will stop complaining about being small then! |

Worry about skill first. Draft for size and you end up with Biggs and devane and brill ect. |

I believe Vesey can sign for more $ in August as a UFA even if the Preds offer an opportunity to burn off a year by playing this year. |

Read Mike's article. It's still an ELC, so there's limits on salary/bonus, which presumably NASH would max.
Really boils down to where he wants to play: all the teams can do is pitch him on facilities, opportunity, ice-time, etc. and NASH has already offered him a top 6 position apparently. |

So now we're getting Stamkos, Matthews, Zaitzev, Radulov and Vessey?
- .HOHO.
Normally this kind of a motherlode would fall under classic HB crazy talk, but these are all very plausible signings with some credibility behind the sources. |

I would assume he would have already signed in Nashville if he wanted to go that route. He's had a long (frank)ing time to do that |
