Let's try again.
Hi, can you please clarify this because to me it seems as though you are saying that an unproven player should be able to self-determine for whom he plays. And it seems to me that you are saying that the top med student does have this ability to choose for whom he works. Am I misunderstanding? - Scoob
Yes. A med student who just graduated can sign a contract of any amount with any organization if it's offered. An NHL player can only sign a contract with a designated organization for a fixed maximum amount.
When I say choose, I mean a person can choose between multiple organizations if they all offer contracts. I imagine the top person at any profession will receive interest from multiple organizations upon graduation like a top tier junior hockey player would. |

i hear ya. its funny im not a stats guy either, and those are the guys that try to prove me wrong with Corsi Rel or Fenwick or WOWY or any of the other advanced stats. i like to use the eye test traditionally and i just dont see his worth when compared to the worth of medvedev. but agree to disagree i guess - sjk540
Hakstol is now the third coach to use MacDonald as a 20+ minute, top 4 defenseman. I can buy two of those coaches being idiots with faulty eyes, but three is a stretch. |

Funny, I've got a pair of glasses too. One lense can only watch the games. The other can only looks at the stats. If I open both eyes at the same time, I automatically go blind. - Tomahawk

I love the Vesey talk.
I always hear from teams it's a business when making decisions. There is something in the CBA that allows Vesey to make a business decision. That's all he did.
Why isn't there complaining when a player is drafted but never gets signed because the team doesn't like how he developed?

Very clear. Still apples-and-oranges imho, though. The former is a "free market" whereas the latter is a closed system.
I don't have a complaint about either system as they currently exist. |

If the Flyers drafted Provorov but never signed him because he didn't develop well, rest assured there would be complaining. |

Well that and essentially lying to the team for years, but hey, that's a character issue not a hockey issue, right? |

And that's fine, just don't say that is how the rest of the world works, because it isn't. The world of sports is different than the rest of the working world, which is what I initially said. - Scoob
So if you field 3 job offers are you not choosing where would like to work?
Or do the employers get together and tell you? |

Good points. Personally, I enjoy Poile getting screwed. That org seemed so offended when we offer sheeted Weber which was within the rules. Once again, they're not happy although this is also within the rules.
Of note, I am glad they matched with what we now have for prospects. 4 1sts was a high cost. |

At that point I get to choose, but if I really wanted to work for the 4th company, the one who didn't offer me the job, I'm not getting to work where I want.

I agree. These kids know from a relatively young age that they will be drafted. If they're really that afraid of playing for a team not of their choosing, they can choose a different career path. By continuing on and entering the draft, they may not have a say on who drafts them, but they are basically indicating that they are comfortable with being drafted by whichever team drafts them. If this was a problem for them, they can choose a different profession, I'm sure some other Canadian boy would gladly take their place. |

Every player should be a free agent every year. What happens if a player signs a multi-year contract with a team with an understanding of the team's development and that changes? Doesn't seem very fair, does it? |

I was able to choose the location, company, position, and salary that I got in the real world. These poor NHL players, only getting paid hundreds of thousands of dollars as 18-year-olds to live out their childhood dreams but not in the city of their choosing...what could be crueler? - jmatchett383
Well said as usual.
This is such a stupid conversation. What is the alternative to the draft? Thank you, great debate.
