I think players should have to write an essay to join the team they want. If it's approved, they get to sign there, if it's rejected they're sent to edmonton. |

I'm picturing a huge NHL "Career Day" where they all bring their resumes and highlight clip portfolio and visit the team tables they like. lol - Scoob
I think it would be more like regular FA where teams would be calling agents more than agents calling teams |

Preds: "So Jimmy, this is your last year, you must be pretty excited."
Vesey: "Yep."
Preds: "Soooo...have you given any thought to signing with us after you're done with college?"
Vesey: "Yeah, sorta, I don't know."
Preds: "We're really excited about seeing you with us in the future, that's why we used a draft pick on you."
Vesey: "Sorry, I was eating a burrito. What was that again? Oh yeah, um, I mean, cool, I guess."
Preds: "So are you interested in signing with us?"
vesey: "Dude, I'm busy with call of duty."
Preds: "Jimmy...hello? Jimmy?" - jmatchett383 |

I honestly don't think it is, which is why I haven't really added much to this argument. I agree with points made on both sides. The draft is one of the most exciting things about the NHL and getting rid of it does a disservice to fans. I can't see anyone wanting to attend or tune into a giant mess of kids trying to sign contracts with any team they want.
I just find it funny that this is another example of Poile being frustrated with written rules in the CBA. The Flyers signed Weber to a massive offer sheet, so he (allegedly) decides to cut ties with any sort of trades with them. Now, Vesey exercises his right to sign with any team and Poile blows up. If Vesey's camp did lie, that is morally wrong but certainly not illegal. He didn't sign a written agreement so he's allowed to choose who he wants.
I think it would be stupid for him to choose the Leafs over the Preds, though. Yeah, his dad and brother are in the organization and they're heading down the right path toward contending again, but I think I'd want a taste of the playoffs right away. He could've played for the Preds, in the playoffs, right now. - TobyFlenderson
Agreed. Once you sign a contract, you're locked in (for the most part). Until then, it's all handshakes and good will. I just don't see an auction type atmosphere as being better for the league than the draft, not by a longshot.
I remember JD Drew not wanting to come to the Phillies years ago. I thought that was bullpoop, but never thought getting rid of the draft was the solution.
Most players are just happy to be in the league and playing hockey for a living. Few, like Lindros, (JD Drew, and apparently Drouin), think they are good enough to buck the system and survive the bad PR that comes after. Good for them. Luckily, from a baseball perspective, JD Drew was a player the Phillies could survive without. He was good, but not nearly as good as he thought he was coming out of college.
Anyway, no GM should be offended by this as they are the 1st to cut a player who they don't feel is getting the job done because this is, above all, a business.
And no top player should be surprised when they go to the bottom-feeders of the league as that is how the draft system works, although Edmonton being there year after year is a bit disturbing.

They're kids in the NHL and this is the way it's always been done, so they're never going to outwardly complain. They aren't crying poor, but I'd be pretty pissed if I had to wait 7 years before I could get fair market value for what I was doing. Especially when a normal NHL career isn't even that long. - PhillySportsGuy
But you weren't talking about the "normal" guy, you were talking about the top guys getting paid what they deserve. But again, if they don't think that the draft system is fair, then they can choose another "real world" profession where they can work for whoever agrees to their terms of employment. No one is forcing them to play in the NHL. |

By the same token, if McDavid didn't want to go to Edmonton, he could have returned to juniors and re-entered the draft in 2 years, or chosen a different profession. No one made it so that his only option in life was to play for Edmonton. |

I'm glad Ghost signed with the team that drafted him and helped him along with his development through prospect camps and advice. would have really sucked if after 4 years the kid didn't sign and went elsewhere. |

Our floor assemblers here work just as hard as NHL players.
The guys who have been here 30+ years sometime break $25/hour. I think one guys is actually at $30/hour (these numbers are based on overhead relative to salary, I have never seen a chart with everyone's pay).
But it's okay, because they were able to negotiate with multiple companies. |

Nothing. They chose a profession that pays at that level. They were able to try to work for anyone who would hire them at their desired rate, and they chose to work here. |

I love the Vesey talk.
I always hear from teams it's a business when making decisions. There is something in the CBA that allows Vesey to make a business decision. That's all he did.
Why isn't there complaining when a player is drafted but never gets signed because the team doesn't like how he developed? - J35Bacher

There was a lot of...stuff...floating around in the water cooler today about AMac. Thought I'd try my hand at a response:
Since MDZ went down with injury and AMac was called up the Flyers have registered a score adjusted Cf% of 53.25%. That is good for 6th in the NHL in that span. The team’s goals for per 60 has been 2.81. That’s 3rd in the NHL.
Before Mac was called up, the Flyers had an adjusted Cf% of 48.45%. That was 19th in the NHL. Goals for/60 was 1.93. That was 4th worst in the NHL. Heck, if you want to be more precise, in the timeframe between Ghost’s first game and AMac’s call up, the Flyers only registered a Cf% of 49.25 and a Gf/60 of 2.06.
There’s a bunch of reasons for this drastic increase in team 5v5 performance, but it sure hasn’t been AMac. In the timeframe since his call up, he has posted the WORST score adjusted Relative Cf% of the dmen. Somehow the only d man on the team who generates less shots than the Ghost-Mac pairing is Schultz. And no one allows more shot attempts against than MacDonald. So, yeah….this surge in underlying numbers has nothing to do with the player putting up the worst possession stats during this surge. And comparing his stats to other player’s who didn’t have the benefit of being a ride-along during this team best stretch is disregarding any semblance of context. |

Just saw a rumor that the Flyers will sign Emery to back up Mase until Neuvirth is fit, to allow Stolarz to go back to the Phantoms.
Nothing confirmed, but I believe it. |

This sounds like a horrible idea. The guy has played 7 games (and 21 minutes a backup in a playoff game where he got lit up) over in the DEL. I'm not sure what the other options are, but I think I'd rather have Labarbera. |

MacDonald-Ghost have a GF60 of 2.77. MDZ-Ghost were only 1.98 and Manning-Ghost were only 1.77 GF60. You can drop the pretense that Ghost has great on-ice offensive numbers with every partner.
