I certainly don't want to see them stumbling into the playoffs. It's not a good sign to see them continue their last game recoils. It's happened way too often and doesn't give me a lot of hope in the post season.
They've all but eliminated any chance of moving out of the last playoff spot at best which means a match up with the Caps. - mayorofangrytown
I'd prefer to see them catch fire again too, but honestly this is so much more palatable than what was expected before the turn of the calendar year. I'm desensitized to the lows anymore, I'm ready to naively enjoy the highs. |

Just a note if this is what you were suggesting: a not great offensively, but terrific defensive d man can still post great Corsi #s. It's really no different from a lackluster defensive d man but great offensive one (Medvedev for example), posting good numbers. As long as you defend the NZ tight and can get the puck and get it out with control, you don't have to be a wizard offensively. Really AMac's numbers stem mostly from being one of the worst NZ defenders in hockey. I don't think this is shocking -- eye test backs this one up for anyone who has seen a single game.
His scoring chance % for is the worst relative to the other d men fwiw. Third worst for high danger chances for %. Meaning he loses the scoring chance battle more than any other d man. His numbers against aren't actually bad though. I don't find this surprising really -- he is actually decent at coverage and the like. The issue isn't that he's a dumpster fire in his own zone....it's that he's always IN his own zone. And it's usually his own doing. - Mononoke
I was suggesting, Macdonald's contain vs eliminate style of defense is never going to look great when viewed through his Corsi numbers. I suspect his scoring chances against numbers wouldn't appear as bad as hid Corsi number would indicate.

I guess today is the anniversary of the Tie Domi penalty vox incident?
Speaking of which, I guess I'm hoping the Leafs draft that Austen Matthews kid. I don't care about Leafs eithee way, they're poorly managed but any team that can fill up their own barn regularly does deserve better...at least from a fans perspective. |

Except last season in a bigger sample size with the Flyers he was not always in his own zone. He had better CA/60 than most of the defense, including guys like Schenn and Grossmann who had very similar usage. |

2 pts behind the islanders with a game left remaining against them all but eliminated them from getting that 2nd spot? Maybe they get it maybe they don't. Maybe they miss completely. I'm happy with how they've done considering the playoffs were a pipe dream earlier this season. - funmaster18
Since Ghost came the team has been entertaining to watch. More so as Baby Schenn blossomed. The unlikely hero brigade of the one night of Raffl as superpower and Gudas as Czech national team member now I'll show you all I can score has been fun. If they go to the playoffs it is a good thing. But if they don't, it doesn't mean this run hasn't be thoroughly worth it. |

This is Frank Sarasmellmi's take. Even though he now works for TSN, the self loathing of a Philly beat reporter remains a part of him. |

Nick Cousins has the highest points/60 on the team right now. Last year #2 and #3 were White and Lecavalier. p/60 is a hugely misleading stat in small ice time samples.
Cousins also has a GF60 of 3.04. That's 3/10 of a goal higher than the next highest player. He also has the lowest GA60 at 1.40. Next lowest? 1.80. Could that be....and I'm just guessing here...that the games he has played have coincided with the team's best stretch? I don't want to lump him entirely in with AMac because, unlike him, his underlying numbers are actually decent and sustainable to a lesser degree. But the same idea applies. Cousins has passed the stat and eye test, even if he's been a bit sheltered, but there is no chance his numbers aren't massively inflated. Look at his PDO.
It would be like comparing Cousin's team leading GF% to Giroux's...who is the 5th worst on the team in GF%.
He sucks right? - Mononoke
I compared the GF60 of three D pairings with roughly similar ice times and usage. Cousins has got much less ice time and much easier minutes than Giroux so that's a terrible analogy.
I'm thoroughly amused by the argument that any positive stats MacDonald has are primed for regression due to SSS but any negative stats (just Corsi really, since his Fenwick is strong) wouldn't return to last year's levels given enough games. Brought to you by the same people who assume any possession struggles of the MacDonald-Ghost pairing are all Mac's fault, despite the fact Ghost had similar issues with Manning and MDZ, his two other most common partners. |
