So, which entry-level job that a 22-year-old can get will pay you upwards of $900K to start?
- jmatchett383

Not many, but the best in the world at their positions probably get paid that amount.

The argument I'm making is that if you're worth $8M over 8 years then you should be able to make that amount. Why do players have to wait when no other industry forces people to wait?

Couturier is considered Canadian!

No way, we'll give them VDV and they'll like it, maybe even make the playoffs next season.

Because a sports league is not capitalistic.

Edit: I knew a guy who was in his 40s growing up, he was an eye surgeon, which is a pretty specialized, lucrative field. He pulled down $250K/year. So I'm not sure which civil engineer you're thinking of gets an entry-level job of $250K or more.

Edit again: That civil engineer will not be fixing the bridges, because that requires a PE. Getting your PE takes a minimum of (who woulda thunk?) 3 years.

Collusion. The CBA, the draft, transfer agreements... it's all anti-competitive BS.

He's comparing apples to apples, its just one is a delicious firm, crisp, juicy honeycrisp apple (NHL) and the other is a normal dull red delicious apple (real world).

Both apples, just different levels.

If they're paying me close to $1M per year...deal!
- jmatchett383

But what if Philly is willing to offer $8M per year, but can't because Pittsburgh drafted you and has your rights for 14* years? (*Assuming 40 year engineering career vs 20 year NHL career)

Eric Lindros was making more as a rookie than Mark Messier did that same year (link: http://montrealgazette.co...nhl-salaries-skyrocketing).

The league will never allow that to happen again.

It should be the goal of every NHL team to gain a majority and force the competing teams to close up shop to get the highest market share in the NHL.
- jmatchett383

Right. If Toronto was the only hockey team they'd have all the fans and get all the money. Free market.

i mean, i know its picking your poison basically, but if we have two sub par defensemen, id rather have the one that can do a little more for me in terms of skill
- sjk540

Seeing as this team has a mediocre defense at best, I think the poison best picked here is the conservative (defensive) one, not the more interesting skill (offensive) one. I'll take boring Brandon Manning with his mere one (awesome) goal and AMac, who I don't think is near as bad as some think, over Medvedev and his skills at this stage in the game.

Yeah, but no one is going to. An entry-level engineer making $100K is largely unheard of, and tops out at $200K or so.

In what industry are you forced to make less than you're worth for 7 years? That's the ultimate question.

One that isn't based on capitalism and strives to make the most money for all of the companies in the industry.

If I was on a public computer, I'd have an answer about what people are "worth" with regards to the structure of large corporations.

What's laughable is pretending this 13-5-3 run the Flyers are on is in spite of the play of the defenseman who has got the second most ice time in that period.
- Feanor

Dude you still have not posted a single thing that shows AMac has anything to do with that. You posted biased p/g stats and the TEAM record. It is a joke. I'm done wasting my time until you can make an actual argument.

Terrible corsi rel. high PDO. 12% oiS% and paired with the best offensive defenseman on the team in quite a while.

I don't even think it would be bad for parity. Dumb teams would overpay for young talent and (frank) themselves in the future. The sports leagues have basically left so much to luck.

what prevents players from "getting what they are worth" is not the draft system. 3 yrs, yes, ok because there is a rookie cap but not 7. the salary cap is what prevents players from getting more money. Every major sports league uses the draft system. even junior hockey uses it. I personally believe in the system but that's me.

A very small minority of people make greater than 6 figures, let alone just shy of 7.

And the people who are making that much cash - 7 figures plus - are likely CEOs/upper management, not new hires.

Haha yeah, sports leagues are nothing but cartels.
- Tomahawk

It's funny how American sports are mainly cartels based on salary caps and drafts, but European sports like soccer tend to be free for alls where top players can get signed at age 15.

You can still have a salary cap. Players will just be 18 year old UFAs.

It's actually a free market attitude
- PhillySportsGuy

So true.

Pro sports are more like little models of communism. They tell you who you must work for, have salary caps, labor unions, wealth redistribution and want all teams to be fairly marched.

I think a little free market thinking would do all sports one good.

When Vessey gets traded years from now some GM is going to tell him "it's a business". I don't mind seeing it cut both ways.

I think the flaw in your argument is the whole idea of "worth". To piggyback off an earlier conversation, is AMac worth the money he is earning? Is McDavid worth more than G?

There's that, but I prefer their community-based club system for development. Like Örnsköldsvik and Modo.
