So with Bernier stealing games lately, and Oilers picking it up, the Canucks might actually get the 1OA. If you pick Matthews, which center do you move to wing? I would love to see our top 9 like this:
Dank-Hank-Sutter
Baertschi-Horvat-Hansen
Gaunce-Matthews-Virtanen
Send McCann down? It's a good problem to have. - Crazybagoham
I dont want Gaunce in my top-9 unless we are going for another 1OA. I would rather see Etem, McCann or even Vey (yes Vey) in that role over Gaunce |

A lot of folks are over Gaunce eh? I like his work ethic personally, but that role really could go to anyone. |

Honestly I was never a fan of his, but he has surprised me with his development. I just dont see him more than a 3rd liner at the peak of his career (not start) and play predominantly in a checking role capable of contributing a few ugly ones each year. He did start scoring more this year in Utica, and probably needs more time in that role for it to remain a part of his game, but if hes in the NHL next season, he will be in that 4th line/pressbox rotation role IMO |

This could all change if we chuck Gaunce and sub in Matthews - CanuckDon
Don, I would be happy as a pig in poop. Exactly what this team needs... a potential star to build around. |

Gaunce is a superstar in my NHL13 league. I had to trade him away because he was asking $7M per by his 4th year in the league. |

I like him waaay more as a center, he plays pretty soft as a winger. I agree they didn't develop him right from Junior (maybe all the coaching turnover in his time). I wouldn't be surprised to see him gone this summer, considering he's an old MG pick. I've always seen him as more, but maybe that time is gone. Have to think there's a reason Gaunce/Shinkaruk never got a callup from Utica all year, despite their solid training camps. Oh well, I guess this is just overhaul.

Indeed, it is an assumption, as is every single post on this site.
For arguments sake, lets eliminate Shink from the conversation all together, lets assume we got him for free or simply drafted him ourselves.
Henrik, Sutter*, Bo, McCann, Gaunce, Vey.
Assuming all of the above play center, where does Granlund drop in, even if Vey gets the boot this summer.
Keep in mind, one of the reasons Granlund and the Flames were so discontent was because he reportedly blowed at very position except C.
Alternatively, does subbing in Granlund for McCann really make this team better? - Whiskey-Tango
Fair enough
But here I think MNGT is basically telling Vey Gaunce and McCann to poop or get off the pot as Granlund could literally snag that 4C spot. With Hank Sutter and Bo locking up the top 3 a good competition for 4C is exactly what this club needs. It did wonders for Bo and I'm betting MNGT wants the same results with the next 4C.
I think McCann needs a year in Utica and Gaunce (to me) doesn't appear ready but he looked damn good in preseason and early this year. Vey (to me) has shown signs of improvement. Not sure we want to declare him a bust just yet. |

well said, I'm still stuck in MG/2013 years, where any prospect looked good. |

I think management said they were keeping Gaunce down because he was finally getting top minutes, playing all situations and it was helping his development. Getting a call up to play 5-10 minutes in a game, a couple morning skates isnt going to do the player much good in comparison to playing 20 minutes a night in all situations. Players not getting called up was overblown by many since most get just the scraps of icetime, limiting their chances of being successful |

Gaunce and Gretzky, don't you see the correlation?
They both have a "Guh" therefore gaunce is the next Gordie Howe. |

oh mmkay, I never did see a Benning explanation on that (it was probably after they decided on the rosters after training camp). But with a whole year in Utica playing that role, and being exposed for the rest of the season to NHL play/working out with the team this summer.... he might be a solid bottom 6 option. Let's hope with Prust/maybe higgins/Burrows roster spots free there will be more opportunities next year.
edit= Dorsetts spot shouldn't be safe next year either imo |

IMO, I don't think Benning is trying to "build" a team right now. More like filling some gaps to keep the team competative until they understand what they have in the system. I don't think there is one prospect on this team that's a true cornerstone to build a franchise around. Players like Horvat, McCann, and Gaunce will fill supporting roles when the nucks once again become a competitive team.
That's why I think a high draft pick is the single most important goal for this team. Nothing else matters right now. Got to find that superstar, just like they did when they drafted the twins. Cornerstone players. |

It's worked for Detroit for 20 years, it's called "developing your players". Were just not used to seeing it around here maybe so people are caught off-guard |
