Imagine if Jack and Sam were sent to Rochester. We'd easily be the number 1 team in the rankings for prospects. We just have our top guys in the NHL. I'd be okay drafting a center or two. Let them develop or play them as wingers. From what I recall we have a 1st and a 2nd as well as 3-4 3rds. Those I'd take all wingers and defensemen. A goalie in later rounds, a center or two, then dart board for the rest. - Zschalberg
been odd saying this all year...the sabres are overstocked at center from Eichel and o'reilly on down to reinhart and gus playing wings because of the glut...

word around here is that the sabres are hot after stamkos...that said, a nice fallback might be david backes who's been in a top-nine role in st. louis...word is the 32 yr. old's looking for $6m+/season on a longer term contract - Michael Pachla
Backes 5 yrs ago sure.

If player A routinely misses time, and player B routinely plays close to a full season, then yes, the value is similar.
We got a lot out of Kane over his 65 games. Guess how much we got out of him over the other 17? - sbroads24
But if Player B plays those extra 17 and only has the same amount of points, maybe Player B is - on the +/- in those extra games and costing us Ws. |

What do you grade Lehner?
I say D.
He proved when healthy he can be good.
He cant stay healthy. - ImThatGuy
Sorry, but I still can't agree with this. He had an ankle injury. It happens to goalies. He came back from it and aggravated it. They shut him down and gave him the surgery now so he can make sure he's ready for the next season. Multiple players on this team have had injures and many of those injuries have lasted longer than they were supposed to.
So I give him a C. He looked good in his games. He got hurt. Happens.
If it happens again I'll start to join the injury prone team but at this point it's 1 injury for the Sabres. |

Other than the 1st round pick I wouldn't be surprised if we went heavy with defensemen in the draft. We have some okay guys but not a ton of great talent. Either that or heavy on scoring wingers that can develop for a few years - Zschalberg
The only "top4" defenseman we have in the system is Guhle
If we trade for a partner for Risto though, we'll still be ok on defense for quite a bit
Besides those 2, McCabe & Bogosian and possibly Pysyk are other "top4" talents
Small sample size, but we gotta like what we see out of Nelson
Most of us feel that Ruhwedel can be an NHL defenseman
That gives us 8 guys all under the age of 25
We do have much more prospect depth at forward though
So continuing to draft defensemen would seem like a good idea
Especially Euros & College guys who we can take our time in developing, since it seems as though there isn't much of a rush |

he'll get that on the market...perennial 20-goal scorer (26 and 27 over two of the past three seasons)
plus leadership and a stout two-way game |

A good thing is if one of the centers goes out with injury, we have another to step in. We haven't had that good fortune in I don't remember when. |

NHL Defenseman and defenseman that I want on my playoff run team are different, though. Not saying we need all 6 guys to be Duncan Keith and Drew Doughty, but we'll see how they are. I'd given up on CR a while ago but, luckily, I'm often wrong on those things. Let's hope that trend continues.
If we can get some of these spots effectively filled with guys already in the system it'd be the best way to get into the playoffs long term. |

I see what you're saying, but it doesn't matter imo. If a guy gives me 20 in 65 or 20 in 20 sure one of them is obviously better than the other. But if, for example, one guy is only going to play 20 games a year and is amazing for those 20 games it hurts his value. 20 goals is 20 goals. But I wouldn't pay the 20 in 20 guy that much more than the 20 in 65 because the team doesn't get that much better with one over the other.
Just my opinion. |

I look at it as $6m for a 25-30 goal, top-six, shutdown forward |

The 20 goal Evander Kane is better
Because the 25 goal Kane doesn't exist yet
Were not talking about a couple games here and there
Over the past 3 years Kane has missed 90 games
And like you keep saying, what's important is whether he's healthy for the playoffs, which I 100% agree. However do you trust that will be the case? |

Who's captained a team that's know for poor showing come playoff time.
Always loved the player but 6 mil for a 32 yr old isn't smart business. |
