Nashville was in the playoffs for 8 straight years. Trotz will get the Jack Adams this year, he has never had a top-6 to work with before this year and Washington has been a juggernaut under him. Laviolette was out of work for many years because of how defensively flawed his system was, all offense in Philly. Luckily for him, he's coaching the best d-corps in the NHL or they may not be in the playoffs at all. He has turned them around offensively though.
I agree WD is not that great, but Trotz is top-5. - neem55
Yes I agree with you, Laviolette is not defensively great. He tweaks games but he has holes too. Noticed that when he was in philly. (notice Ive never said I wanted him here....for that reason). Still beat the pens though.
THe point was some doubt a coaches role and credit rosters. But they went from terrible to #1 by adding him (and assistants), so obviously those people are very wrong.
We must all remember that its not all on 1 guy either. Its also who he has with him. Laviolette should partner with a defense coach that is stellar for a more complete system. People crediting a single coach for success dont understand that theres more people in that success story chain. HC's usually dont run defense. It does happen, but unusual. Houda for example runs bostons stellar D. But fans credit Julien which is completely inaccurate. |

I agree but Nashville was a different team when they missed. This unknown guy named Pekka Rinne was injured for most of the year and played only 24 games. Nashville missed the playoffs. This guys comes back and plays 65 games Nashville is in the playoffs. I think you should give him some credit as well. - Linden_4_Capt
of course that is a factor as well. |

edit: it was 9 times in ten seasons, not eight in a row. My bad. |

That's fair. I think it's safe to say whoever coaches d under Trotz deserves a HC nod perhaps, although I was under the impression that he as a coach is very defensive minded (which is why getting OV to "buy in" was such a big deal)

As I said, it does happen sometimes but rarely. Thats often an entire team defensive system then.
Problem with those systems is its not very flexible. So teams using that get killed in the playoffs by good coaches for being inflexible tactically. Thats why you'll get teams that have great seasons but no playoff success. And lets face it, trotz has pretty much none.
Look at st louis. Have they even won a playoff round with hitchcock? Dont recall them winning, and its for that same reason.
like Ive pointed out before in the last 10 years of the SC winners all 10 coaches of those teams have been tactical tweaker coaches. It is a reality of todays NHL. You cannot win the cup without it. So do not bet on washington or st louis winning the cup this year. |

Again, he's never had a top-6 forward group. The all-time leading scorer for Nashville? Who knows, they've never had any talent up front. His fist year in washington to a game 7 away from the conference finals, so I'm not quite sure what you mean by no playoffs success.
We'll see how washington does this playoffs, I know where I put my money before the season started so I sure hope you're wrong

Not a brunette guy? I like the olive skin, so I lean in that direction. Give me four beers and I tend to not notice hair color among other things though... |

I'm not a fan of racism of any kind on any given day. You're implying Hongcouver is not a racist name is just as ignorant as it gets. |
