as usual a great read Bill. It really is like losing a family member. The Team and the city were so lucky to have a guy like Ed come along. No matter what you thought of some of the decisions over the years you always knew the decisions were made with his heart being in the right place. What more could a franchise ask for?
RIP Mr. Snider. |

Absolutely. After the start they had, I never dreamt they'd be here.
There is a tribute video released by the team. Great stuff in there. Including a nice memory from G about lunch with Ed during a slump. Very different advice from what he expected. And illustrative of where G's "just have fun" speech before period 3 of a big game came from.

Wow. That is very touching, extremely well put together.
You know how Duke, and other college programs dedicate the court to iconic coaches? Like UCLA is John Wooden court at Pauley Pavilion... Duke is Coach K court etc....
I wonder if the Flyers can do something like that. Ed Snider rink, at the WFC something to that effect. Without Ed Snider, there is no Philadelphia Flyers. Just hanging a banner for him doesn't seem like it's enough. |

without Ed Snider a good many of the city rinks would be closed. the city was in real financial straights and the rinks were going to be closed. He took them over and renovated them. I was at the reopening of Cobbs Creek where I was a volunteer coach and he had Bettman come out for the reopening. Hate the guy or not but Bettman took the time to come out because he respected what Snider did. I feel so lucky that the team I am so passionate about had an owner (I don't care I he sold majority interest away, he still WAS the owner) like him |

Snider was a minority owner. The family is so big, and there is no one from the (large multigenerational) family being groomed. I would suspect the Robertses know what they are going to do. They've had plenty of time to determine (and likely with Ed's input). So probably after a decorous period of mourning there'll be an announcement of a new chairman. It will never be the same, though.
Although, it could be they bring in a new minority partner, I really can't imagine that being the case. - bodiva88 thank you

Watching these videos of the players and others remember Ed on CSN is getting me emotional at work. This team is going to give the Caps a hell of a series. Washington should be worried. |

Patrick Burke wrote about his time as a Flyers college scout. It was his first year out of college himself and as he planned his first trip, he realized how much it was going to cost in hotels, plane tickets and rental cars. Plus he was under 25 at the time, so there were additional surcharges.
Apparently one of the bean counters asked him about the spending, wondering if the kid was renting Escalades, and he was worried, so he went to Paul Holmgren to discuss it and get an idea of what kind of budget he was on.
The answer he got sums up the passion Ed Snider had about winning:
"We're the Flyers. See the games you need to see. Don't worry about the cost."
Jesus, we will be lucky if the team's new leadership has half as much passion as Mr. Snider did for this team. |

I was thinking about this today. Who the hell is going to lead this team now? Who is going to come close to the level of passion, dedication and loyalty to the fans and team? If we get a Josh Harris type of leadership, this team is going to fall apart. That passion and drive for nothing but the best for the team and its fans needs to stay true.

Yes. I know he really took pride in kids in the Philadelphia area being able to play hockey and have ice time. What a generous man. His philanthropy is really his legacy. |

I find it hard to believe there isn't a plan in place, considering that they've known for some time that he was ill. And I wouldn't be surprised if he had a great deal to say to Roberts about this and that they would have listened.
(I just realized older Mr. Roberts died last year. The quietest chief exec in the region slipped out without a whisper.) |
