Watch jacks highlight goals for the season. He has a bunch from the left face off circle. I thought it was odd. - cabin
A lot of those were on the PP and if not one-timers, then he received the pass settled it down and shot it.
His best goals were from playing center. The one against Columbus, the one against Colorado and the one against the hurricanes were all because he had the freedom to roam a bit which you can't really do from the wing. Centers, generally drive possession and he's the best puck carrier in the league. There was a graph, I can't find it. That showed him better in almost all facets of carrying the puck up the ice than anyone else in the league. You're not going to get that if he's restricted to a third of the ice.
O'Reilly-Eichel-Stamkos would be insane lol. But I do think we're all getting ahead of ourselves with the Stamkos talk, already penciling him into our lineup. - chilliard77
"Pencil" would be the key word
No one is using a sharpie quite yet, but I do think it's a real possibility
I wasn't paying that close attention. But all teams move guys around during the season and even during games. They move around on different lines and they play different positions, but for 90%-95% of the time they play one position. Eichel plays the point on the PP sometimes. Does that mean we should move him to defense? Of course not, that would be stupid. You play guys where they're most effective, bottom line. Which is why you see guys move around during games sometimes to get better matchups. - Wetbandit1
I was tending bar & we were busy (97rock 80s party), so I couldn't really watch...
But on the replay later I saw the initial lineups across the top of the screen & Tavares was listed at LW on the top line
Guys don't play in the same spot 90-95% of the time though...
Not in the offensive zone, unless it's the PP
Otherwise ots so fluid that guys are constantly moving around all over the ice

Yeah I seen that . Graph too back a couple weeks ago. Get 3 skilled players on the ice and they know where they need to be and it can change in a second, Left side, right side, behind the net or point. See the skunk while playing with Jack. Who plays center on that shift ?
Make the nets bigger and you better add the second place holder to the scoreboards there will be a lot of double digit scoring games. With the deflections, speed of the puck and the passing...you want a hockey game to be 20-19? Sounds great but is that our game? - RhinoFan
20-19...
Come on
I think you're wildly overstating what would happen
No one is talking 6inches here
Just an inch or 2 in each direction
Which is more than fair considering how much bigger goalies are now & how many blocked shots there are
If u can get the average game to be something like 5-4, that would be ideal
They can try it in the AHL or even ECHL to see how many inches would have what effect & then adjust from there
Also a goalie... slim down the pants and shoulder pads before you mess with the nets. - MattFreaknEllis
They already are doing that
I think they should also experiment with net size in the minors this coming year to see what kind of difference that'll make

Obviously, it's a fluid game. But guys have their responsibilities based on their position. The center has more responsibility and therefore more freedom to create than a guy on the wing. Very rarely will you find Ovechkin on the right side of the ice. It just doesn't happen very often, if at all. He's a LW and he sticks to the left side of the ice. A center is allowed to roam. That's what I mean by position.

Wingers generally use 2/3 of the ice, not 1/3
Eichel can still carry the puck up the ice if he's a winger...
Kane does, right?
And for some reason, you're assuming that Jack can't be effective, or even dynamic on the wing
Lots of wingers are (I'm not gonna list them, u know)
Why can't Jack?
He's talented enough that he'll thrive in any position on the ice
Sam did it, and Jack is better

Right...
But how many wingers thrive even with this so called limited freedom to create?
U make it sound like Jack can only be good if he's allowed to use 100% of the ice
Idk that Jack can or can't be a better winger than center,
But there's nothing to say we should assume that he won't be able to at least be good there

Ovy could be a bad description but I get what your typing . Ovy picks where he plays.
During a Sabres game our guys are everywhere. but your right they do have their so called positions. But that does change every second of a shift.

Going from center to wing is 10x easier than doing the opposite.
O'Reilly would probably slot in at wing and still spot in at center for defensive draws or PK/PP etc. It's really a non issue
