I like it.
I reckon Sven will get a bit more salary, but overall it's a nice plan.
Who do we pick up from Winnipeg?
They have a lot of salary committed to their backend already, and also have Trouba to resign. They lack depth up front more than anything imo.
They also have a lot of cap space.
Burrows and Tanev for picks and salary dump? - dbot
I don't understand why anyone would want to move Tanev unless you are able to get back a better D.
He might not be perfect but is certainly a good top 4, something that is hard to find. |

No they are sticking around to mentor and play with new BFF Louie Eriksson - VANTEL
All things being equal, would you rather have
Erickson (30 years old)
Lucic (27)
I don't think you'll get either to sign for 2 years like Vrbata did, i think you're looking at 5 years for each. |

Personally, i would move any of our D for a young D blue chipper:
except Tryamkin...he is on my untouchable list right now to see how he develops.
Trouba, Dumba, etc. |

Question:
With Maloney being fired in Phx, does that change the potential scenario's for team's trading to acquire the 1OA pick and selecting hometown boy Mathews? |

I think Hutton has a lot of upside to his game and would keep him also, and agree with belcherbd, the return for Tanev has got to be a better Dman, if you're considering trading him. |

I think Hutton has upside too.
I agree with earlier posts about him not being top 4 material just yet though.
I also like Edler, Sbisa, Tanev and Hamhuis to an extent.
I think they all bring certain elements, but it's clear that a shake up is needed on the backend, and i would be willing to consider moving any of the above for the right deal.
As far as untouchables, i'd list Bo, JV, Brock, Demko, Tryamkin and our pick this year. |

Just a tought. If we got 1OA and Phx got 2nd or 3rd OA , would we trade it + something for Strome + their pick? |

Phoenix already addressed these rumors and they said they are 100% not trading Strome+ or OEL for the 1st overall pick. |

Fair enough, I just don't see the same gap between the top 3 D and the next 4-5 when we select in the 2nd. I think the top 5-6 forwards and a forward available at 33 is a huge jump.
Forwards taken in the top 5 often end up being elite, Defense much less.
Between 2002 and 2011 the D in the top 5:
Whitney, Bouwmeester, Pitkanen, Barker, J Johnson, E Johnson, Hickey, Alzner, Schenn, Pietrangelo, Doughty, Bogosian, Hedman, Gudbranson, Larsson.
3 out of 15 elite IMO
Forwards :
Nash, Staal, Horten, Zherdev, Vanek, Ovechkin, Malkin, Ladd, Wheeler, Crosby, Ryan, Pouliot, Staal, Toews, Backstrom, Kessel, Kane, JVR, Turris, Stamkos, Tavares, Duchene, Kane, Hall, Seguin, Johansen, Niederreiter, Nuge, landeskog, Huberdeau, Strome.
17 out of 31 elite IMO. - belcherbd
Lots of arguments to made here, but I'll start here:
-E.Johnson and Boumeester are as Elite as Vanek and landenskog are at this point.
-Ekblad and Jones are conveniently left off of your list, although so are Barkov, Mcdavid and and in my opinion they are Elite also. There are many more forward picked in the top 5 than you have mentioned that are not elite, thus you are not representing the reality: more of them are picked, in general and more of them bust for that reason.
-you are talking about a "gap that you see", which unless you are a professional scout seems a little skeptical. Every other year there are guys that you and I have never heard of picked and turned out to be elite in the first round (Ristolinen, Brodin, Lindholm, Karlsson, OEL, Seabrook)
-also it's worth pointing out, that over the past 6-7 drafts, defenceman have been much more likely to make the big clubs/grow to top-4 defenders than previous to that. There are less defencemen in the NHL than Forwards, the basic math is that less of them are able to play at the NHL level due to level of competition and the fact that it is arguably a more difficult position to play. \
I think you made a good point of boom busts, I just think that has more to do with volume (I'd wager at least 3-1 F to D) of forwards picked in those spots. I would be happy to see a left winger picked if it was the BPA, but we've been deprived of good defence enough. Pick one in each of the first two rounds

Because they're going to say "if you win the first pick OEL is available" via media press conference? |

It appears Botch and some of the media want the plan laid out step by step...
from Botch's article:
But holding a ribbon-cutting ceremony to announce they are all in on this rebuild would represent a complete about-face for management from their original blueprint.
Really, they are just as likely to target a couple of key free agents in July, hoping to reload the retool-on-the-fly, the one that failed so miserably this year.
I think Botch forgot to mention injuries... |

I don't know if anyone noticed on Carol's last blog, but Hutton has the second worse Corsi on this team after Bart. Not exactly screaming "i'm ready for top-4 minutes next year" IMO, maybe sheltering him a bit will help his progression. I'd like to see someone else brought in to fill the void left by Hamhuis that can grow with the team UFA or Trade. Make it happen JB! - neem55
