All I know, is that if a player signed to a 1 way contract, passes waivers, they still have a percentage count towards the cap

I think youre right that its not 100% off the books but with Biega it would probably be very minimal

I caught a boss on an inconsistency once and questioned him about it, his response, "I wouldn't say it if I didn't think it was true, but things change so you can't always hold me to my word."

I think there was a change in direction from above him, but to his credit, he didn't throw his own boss under the bus. and then again, don't trust anyone.

I don't think you want to abuse the use of waivers. Biega's signing of a one way contract looks worse on Benning and the Canucks than it goes on Biega. Everybody knows exactly what you are going to get, night in and night out, with how he plays. Benning and co knew this when they signed him. Unless he suddenly dips and becomes a -30 player midway through the season, you don't just put players through waivers because management made an error in contract negotiation.

I have never been a Biega fan (though around the time he signed I was coming around on him being solid before I came to my senses), my problem with him is how he fits with the team. He is going to be nothing more than bottom pairing and he isnt young. He's actually the 3rd oldest defensman on the roster behind Hamhuis and Edler, so why keep him and let him take minutes from the youth you want to develop. It's now getting counterproductive to give him the minutes as guys like Pedan have played those big minutes in the AHL and needs NHL experience now

I went to go look it up, read a couple things in legalese and decided that I am too tired/hung to sort through that jargon

I don't know the Aquilini family. They give a lot of money to the Children's Hospital and support a wide range of research projects. I'm sure they are very nice people but I got a bad feeling that there will always be suspicion that they meddle in hockey operations.

It's their right as owners but their expertise is in agriculture and property development, not managing a professional hockey team.

Biega might be marginally better than Pedan as an NHLer but if you gave Pedan more time in the NHL, he will likely improve and surpass Biega. If they aren't going to play Pedan, they should trade him.

It sounded awkward, the explanations we heard regarding Pedan from JB and WD at the presser.

I once mentioned how people turn on GM's and coaches over nuances. You said you were not one of those people and were a little defensive over the comment. Who cares if he sucks in an interview and contradicts himself. He isnt good in front of a mic.... big deal. That should only matter to Botchford's flock of sheep.

I don't think we need to waste pixels discussing guys like:

Etem
Granlund
Vey
Bartkowski
Weber
Biega

because they are just fillers until something better comes along. We are going to see many of those types over the next 4 to 6 years during this rebuild.

Doesn't have to be a bad feeling , just the reality of someone owning a company.

Many people that own a car, whether they have any mechanical expertise or not, question the mechanic or garage they have entrusted to service it. Do we really have to replace this or that, can we get a cheaper part, rebuilt, salvage from the junk yard.

An NHL club is on a whole other scale of investment, but some interference/input has to be expected.

Whoever owns the Capitals should have stepped in before McPhee traded Forsberg for Erat...

Feck McCaw for signing Messier...

some amount of ownership meddling is expected, an excessive amount can tie a gm's hands, just hoping FA doesn't lean towards the excessive. Imagine how many people give FA their input re. the Canucks on a daily basis.

Etem really stepped his game up at the end of the year, and we have had such a small sample of Granlund, its too quick to pass judgement. That being said, I am not sure these two really deserve to be lumped into the same category as the other 4, or not yet at least.

Bart and Weber need a lift to the airport, or at least Bart might, I think Weber chartered a plane out of Vancouver, right after the media availability.

I think weber had to take tranquilizers before the media availability just so that he wouldn't say something about management that he would regret later.

Haha fair enough. I don't ever go to Nanaimo, more of a pass-through type city. MOST of the people south of Nanaimo are relatively normal I would say lol. Just watch out for the Saltspring people. danggggg

If hes on the starting roster, its gunna be another long year, i see him as more a 9th D man
- phyllee

Clendening and Corrado were both penciled in as being on the Canucks roster shortly after Bieksa was traded last year. Neither ended up playing a single game for them and were out of the organization pretty quick.

You can shuffle the current D pairings all you like and they won't improve significantly over this past season. So if Benning is looking to be more competitive next year, the personnel is going to have to be different. I'm expecting at least a couple of significant changes coming, most likely through trades.

(I don't think any drafted player coming straight from junior or free agent college guy to make a positive impact next season.)

Who's your team to root for in the playoffs this year?

In the East I'm picking the Panthers. Would like to see Lou win it.

In the West my pick is the Blues. Great uniforms.

Sometimes rich people buy things as items of prestige. Big boats, private jet, sports teams.

A good owner in any business understands their own skill limit and will surround themselves with knowledgeable people to fill those gaps in expertise. A good boss will then step back and let those folks do their thing. Too many examples of how micro-management kills success. And micro-management is usually a result of ego.

Usually rich people have big egos. That's why they purchase items of prestige. Vicious circle.

Agreed. I just have never understood the love for Biega

Etem and Granlund are entering their "Vey Prove It" summers. A mediocre season and they solidify their statuses as placeholders
