is this sarcasm? the reason you cant is good for both players and teams. GMs spend more wisely for the most part and a player doesnt get jammed into the AHL just because of his contract - YuenglingJagr
I'd like to see them opt out of those contracts to find an NHL job. Of course it's easy for me to say Wade Redden should forego 6mil to sign and play in Minnesota for 2mil. However, if it bothers you that much to be in the AHL you do have an option... or you can get paid. |

Small market teams.
Not sure how it wouldn't help big market teams that can afford it. - J35Bacher
That is certainly a valid point. That is another discussion though I think. There is no question the league has made a point to limit the advantage of a big bank roll |

In his situation (and AMacs) the problem isnt that he wasnt good enough...it is because they were so tight against the cap that he literally couldn't be brought up. The reason he is playing in the AHL is because he has a good agent or signed at a good time? Most of these contracts are heavily dependent on when they are signed too. Theres just too many factors that lead to people getting screwed over. The system is simpler now...and it makes GMs play smarter |

Can't we find someone else? There are players on the Phantoms right? Man of sick of running these same guys in and out of the lineup. It's killing me. |

Teams have to take a hard line.
Top guys will get paid. That's nothing you can change. But when you have guys like Engellyand getting what he got and before that Weidman. A role player has a good year and then next thing they get a huge raise which becomes the next guys comparable.
Boedker is looking for 6 million but when you dig into his numbers he is more of a Matt Read.
Lucic is probably going to get 6.5-7 million if on the open market.
Kind of the reason I am ok spending on Stamkos as at least I am spending on a superstar player that is pretty consistent. |

In both cases there was eventually room for them to come back and the teams opted to keep them in the AHL. In Amacs case it happened fairly quickly. They brought up Gostisbehere instead of AMAC. I only vaguely remember Redden's case but he surely wasn't playing well the year before and not to his contract. There were several times the Rangers could have brought him up and didn't.
Anyway, arguing these two isn't really the point. They took away a management tool and that's okay. They also added a salary cap. Also just fine. I'm not happy with either and certainly don't feel bad for the handful of players who end up playing pro hockey in the AHL for several million bucks. |

Here's my timeline of the people in here:
~~~Prior to Game 1~~~
"Everything from here on out is icing on the cake! Let the young guys get experience. Flyers have been a hot team. We could potentially take this in 7! Even if we get swept, the future is bright and we have a ton of young talent on their way up. Hextall for President!"
~~~During Game 1~~~
"This is terrible. They need to turn it around quickly. Sit Jake. Sit Manning. Coots is hurt again. I never expected the Flyers to lose this game. It's unacceptable"
~~~After Game 1~~~
"What 30-goal scorers can we add to this team to make them a cup contender next year?"
~~~End Scene~~~
Christ. It's a best-of-7. Just let it play out. We weren't expected to beat the *Best Team in the NHL* and we lose 2-0, on away ice, after the refs decided to take over the game and make it a special-teams contest. Enjoy the series... |

I agree. I'm hoping we can find a gem of an offensive player in this years draft. It would be intriguing to me if they attempted to move up and target someone specific like they tried to do with Ekblad. - mayorofangrytown
The offensive cupboards need to be restocked, no doubt. And I think Hexy will turn over every stone looking for the players he wants - the draft, college, europe, wherever. |

Just curious as to why you believe the flyers have the edge in bottom 6 forwards? Imo that's where were vulnerable. They are bigger and faster in that bottom 6. johansson and that 3rd (4th?) line made the game sealing play - Just5
I expected a major mismatch based on what I saw on paper but the Cousins line was very good until it got broken up due to the Couturier injury. The 4th line was steady even when matched up against the Ovechkin line. Yeah the second goal was a big play in the grand scheme of things but it was the result of a terrible turn over by Jake. I give them credit for making the most of it. |

Agreed. This team is so horrible, we need some 40-goal scorers.
But no, really, this is dead on. |

The salary cap isnt completely meant to just level the playing field money wise...it is also meant to prevent dynasties of old. The blackhawks have one because of pre-lockout contracts that cant happen anymore. There will be ways to exploit any system and its clear that competent management trumps all right now. We are lucky to have it and hopefully it will pay off.
As someone who is much more involved than the casual fan...I dont mind it one bit. I think it is more fun/ just as fun to know about draft prospects and cap management than it is to just look at the biggest names on UFA market and expect your big budget team to sign them. The system rewards smart decisions more than big pockets |
