LOL yep preeeety much - YuenglingJagr
Prior to the game. Yes people are excited and still are. I don't know any competitive person who expects to lose so yes, we do think we can win this series even if we rationally all the odds are against us.
During the game. When you get 3 PP in the 1st period you have to make something happen. They didn't. So you allowed to be mad that in a game, which they were in up until the 3rd period, the Flyers didn't play well enough.
Today. We see a team that had a chance to make something happen and didn't. ANd yes we want another 30 goal scorer but that is something we have talked about almost all season. We know the weaknesses on the team. |

I expected a major mismatch based on what I saw on paper but the Cousins line was very good until it got broken up due to the Couturier injury. The 4th line was steady even when matched up against the Ovechkin line. Yeah the second goal was a big play in the grand scheme of things but it was the result of a terrible turn over by Jake. I give them credit for making the most of it. - Baxter27
We are severly outgunned. Read is such a shell of himself from 3 yrs ago. VDV has no business dressing for a playoff team.

Here's my timeline of the people in here:
~~~Prior to Game 1~~~
"Everything from here on out is icing on the cake! Let the young guys get experience. Flyers have been a hot team. We could potentially take this in 7! Even if we get swept, the future is bright and we have a ton of young talent on their way up. Hextall for President!"
~~~During Game 1~~~
"This is terrible. They need to turn it around quickly. Sit Jake. Sit Manning. Coots is hurt again. I never expected the Flyers to lose this game. It's unacceptable"
~~~After Game 1~~~
"What 30-goal scorers can we add to this team to make them a cup contender next year?"
~~~End Scene~~~
Christ. It's a best-of-7. Just let it play out. We weren't expected to beat the *Best Team in the NHL* and we lose 2-0, on away ice, after the refs decided to take over the game and make it a special-teams contest. Enjoy the series... - steelydan
lol
I'm still in the "Prior" camp but I don't think it will go past 5 games.

I'd look at Erikason. His 30 goals are intriguing. If we wanted to get tougher then Lucic or Okposo would be the route. Not sure which of those two I'd prefer over the other. Prob Okposo. - arichardson22
Eriksson is a solid two-way player. Have always viewed him as sort of a poor man's Simon Gagne (talking about Gags in his prime) but he, too, has racked up a lot of injuries. Was finally healthy again this season.

It has been entertaining to theorize about the future since their is no game tonight and we are all trying to pretend coots didnt actually get injured anyway |

Exactly.
We all realize how tough this series will be but also know that a few moves and a couple prospects and we are right in the think of it again soon. |

I'd just like to take everyone on a little trip back to 2009.
We were playing the Pittsburgh Penguins, the eventual Stanley Cup winners, in the first round.
In Game 1, the Flyers lost 4-1, and it may as well have been 6-1. Simon Gagne scored a late goal to break up the shutout bid, but the Flyers got heavily outplayed.
In Game 2, a phantom hook on Jeff Carter allowed the Penguins to tie the game late, and a 5-on-3 OT goal won them the game.
In Game 3, the Flyers lost a 2-0 lead but persevered for a 6-3 win.
In Game 4, a late Dan Carcillo (yes, Dan Carcillo) goal cut the lead to 2-1, but Talbot scored an ENG despite heavily outplaying Pittsburgh.
In Game 5, the Flyers rode 28 saves by Biron for a 3-0 win.
In Game 6, the Flyers blew a 3-0 second period lead (reasons abound) and lost 5-3.
The game 1 against Pittsburgh that year was just as bad, if not worse, than last night's game 1. Games 2, 4, and 6 were games the Flyers could have/should have won. So, for those on here who are singing gloom and doom, just a little anecdote about how much a bad game 1 loss has to do with the rest of the series.

Yeah.
Look at some of these playoff teams. Look at the 3rd and 4th lines.
Dallas
Roussel - Faksa - Hemsky
Janmark - Fiddler - Sceviour
Washington
Chimera - Richards - Johansson
Winnik - Beagle - Wilson
LA
King - Lecavalier - Versteeg

Sure, deficiencies that were identified prior to the series are still true today. Secondary scoring, a stronger 3rd dman pair, key players inability to remain healthy. However, it's the knee-jerk reactions that prompted my post.
Flyers got outscored 2-0 yesterday, against a Vezina candidate. And our response should be to buy a dump-truck, load it with money, and find Stamkos? People forgot that we're an 8th seed and we truly don't need to resolve every weakness this off-season. Why not continue to build through the draft, overseas free agency, etc? And then, when you're making strides in every subsequent playoff run, you finally pull the trigger and bring in a piece to put you over the top. Where do we benefit as an 8th seed that signs Stamkos? We then become a 3 seed? Cool. It doesn't mean we're going to win a cup. And if that's the eventual goal, what is the rush? There will be plenty of players out there that can pot 30 goals when we need them. No need to break the bank on someone looking for an outrageous payday.
Disclaimer: I know Stamkos wasn't the only name thrown out there. It's just the one that enrages me the most to hear thrown around. |

Agreed. Go back to rangers 2 years ago. Doors blown off in game 1 and most of the series yet stretched it to 7. Mason alone will get them one. The pp will probably get them one more

The salary cap isnt completely meant to just level the playing field money wise...it is also meant to prevent dynasties of old. The blackhawks have one because of pre-lockout contracts that cant happen anymore. There will be ways to exploit any system and its clear that competent management trumps all right now. We are lucky to have it and hopefully it will pay off.
As someone who is much more involved than the casual fan...I dont mind it one bit. I think it is more fun/ just as fun to know about draft prospects and cap management than it is to just look at the biggest names on UFA market and expect your big budget team to sign them. The system rewards smart decisions more than big pockets - YuenglingJagr

in washington you cant play matchups to keep that gagner line away from the ovechkin line - YuenglingJagr
then you have to shelter them in the offensive zone, its not gonna work all the time and Hakstol has even said he's not a big proponent of the matchups. in a perfect world maybe but he said he doesnt base a lot of his strategy of that. If you feel that way however, putting laughton in directly for Coots and leaving all the other lines untouched, wouldnt be terrible either. Laughton has been billed as a potential 2 way player, a steep drop off from coots, but nonetheless better in his own zone than gagner |

Where does signing Stamkos preclude you from drafting and developing?
Why do I have to wait 3-4 years down the road to sign a FA?
At 26 Stamoks can be part of the now and future.
People seem to keep saying stick to the plan, draft develop and then wait years to sign a FA. But why does it have to be that order?

I think the fact they lost that series in 6 in a real gut wrenching last game might lose your point on some people. |
