Or just wait till next offseason when teams are in a crunch with the expansion draft
Teams like Anaheim & Nashville come to mind
They'll have to trade a defenseman or 2 or they'll prob lose them for nothing

you have roughly a 2-3 year window before the cap gets tight for the sabres

this is the time to load up on a few players to make this team damn good so the kids get confidence and a winning culture before they take the reigns

last think I want is a 7 mil contract to do the red wings a favor, I'd rather invest 7 mil for a player that will make an impact next season and help eichel, risto, reinhart, larsson, etc

Let's just say we trade for Fowler
So next year, we protect him & Risto for sure
Then one of McCabe, Bogosian & say Yandle

Wouldn't it just make more sense to sign a "Yandle" next offseason,
AFTER the expansion draft?

Unless we don't give him a NMC, and then leave him exposed hoping Vegas would take him off our hands instead of McCabe for example

I guess I could see both viewpoints
But if I think McCabe is gonna be a solid guy next year or the year after (and I do), then I don't wanna pay Yandle, or whoever, 6 mil for 5+ years
