It's kind of funny that everyone talks about drafting and development as the only way to build a cup winner yet the past 6 cup winners have added major pieces via trade or free agency. - golfingsince
Every contender needs
Number 1 C (two-way or offensive juggernaut)
Number 1 D (all purpose)

Don't have that, you don't win. |

Well it comes down to scouting - all 3 avenues, just scouting at different levels of hockey
When your team sucks at drafting obviously the junior scouting needs work
When your team has trouble identifying good pro talent at the NHL level and overpays players, then your pro scouts have failed to adequately assess the free agent/trade target's value
I was pretty anti-tank, still kinda am (losing on purpose is gutless), but having good amateur scouts and a good draft helps a lot. The Leafs org has not had any decent young prospects for a long long time. In the Burke era they were so devoid of talent. They kept drafting "character" - aka plugs like Tyler Biggs, etc with 1st rounders. Then they kept trying to sign a bunch of college kids, all sucked except for Bozak. (See Hanson, Irwin, etc). Euro scouting sucked too - Freaking Niklas Wallin.
Getting guys like Hunter helps the org a lot. |

That's a lot of questions but I'll answer as best as I can. First of all, Kudos to you for even knowing that there IS a difference!!
Miss USA is mostly about looks. There are three phases of competition all weighted equally - evening gown, swimsuit and interview.
Miss America is more about the total package. There are five phases of competition - Talent at 35%, Interview at 25%, Evening Gown at 20%, Swimsuit at 15% and On Stage Question at 5%.
There are three things that really make the Miss America system different...there is a talent portion, the interview is much more intense and, most importantly, it provides millions of dollars in scholarships not only to the winners, but runner ups, preliminary winners, etc. every year.
Neither system is necessarily "better" than the other. They are just different. There are girls that are successful only in one system, but there are many that crossover and are successful in both.
Hope this explains it

i think there's a difference between tanking (Buffalo last year, trading any goalie who dared to win a game) and looking at your roster and saying "these guys are (frank)ing terrible and i hate them and i want them gone", which is what Toronto did.

yeah I don't think Toronto tanked. they had a poopty roster and they moved some guys for viable assets.
Buffalo panicked last year and started giving guys away each time they won a game or two |
