This is a "21st Century" suspension. It was in poor taste, shouldn't say it, not to an official especially....but you are right if you play hockey you know that some awful things get said sometimes. Every sport has it. I believe it was Kevin Garnett who told another player his wife tasted like fruit loops. This won't be the last suspension of its kind.
- RhinoFan

Kobe did it too. As well as Simmonds to Avery.

Yeah, I think had the NHL been able to fine a real amount of money instead of the paltry five whatever thousand they would've hit him with like a $25K-$30K fine and that's that, but with the tiny amount they're allowed to fine they really had no choice but to suspend him for a game. Plus it's a message sender. He went over the line. He took a brutal, obvious penalty that was totally unnecessary and then he lost his mind and flipped off-as much as you can with hockey gloves on- the officials twice and was screaming calling them names, and then got into the box banged on the glass with his stick and called them names some more. So yeah, I can see a hefty fine, especially after his antics at the end of the game with the game misconduct after time expired. But a playoff game suspension seems a bit harsh. He's young enough where calling people that was never really accepted. I'm 31 and outside of your buddies, and even when I reached maybe 18 or 19 it wasn't really acceptable then either. Shaw's only 24. He only brought it upon himself. You have to be in control.

This looks really bad. Scary.

I can't tell what it was. His head? Certainly looked like it hit pretty hard. His neck? It was an awkward angle. His back? Certainly seemed to take the brunt of it along with his shoulder. Probably a bit of everything. But that was horrible seeing him facedown like that with his arms at his sides palms up.

I am left handed and played RW as well. I never understood why others didn't like to play that way. Their argument was the one timer was easier, my argument was everything else was easier.
- Mentalorgasm5

I would think a one-timer is only easier if you're being fed from closer to the red line, right? Otherwise wouldn't it seem easier to accept a pass as your whole body is open to the zone and your strong hand more towards the blue line?

It really depends on where the pass is coming from. If your shoulders are square to the pass. Meaning the pass is coming straight at you and would go through your legs. It's tough because you have a lot less time to connect, but the more parallel to the pass you are the bigger the "hit zone" is and the easier it is to connect. You might not get the best shot off if you miss time it a bit you'll still get a shot off unlike if you just miss time it when it's coming straight at you you'll likely miss it altogether.

Edit: That was really unclear. I'll try this. So if I'm at the left point and I'm right handed and a pass is coming from the got on my side of the ice it's going to be a fairly easy one timer, but if the pass is coming across from the right point it's going to be harder because you have a lot less time to make contact with the puck.

This country overacts to everything and then the people or company tries to distance themselves to say " hey that's not on us " just to save face. Wake up people, everyone is so afraid of a lawsuit or being labeled something, it's ridiculous now what's going on in this country. you blink the wrong way and you have a problem now a days, it's just getting out of control.

Who but Shaw is to blame here?

Edit: I agree, it's getting out of control. When comedians can't be comedians it's bad. Imagine if George Carlin was still alive and doing stand-up. He'd be forced into retirement.

They would put 10 seconds of his whole bit up on youtube...the social justice warriors would latch onto it and spread it on facebook (regardless of the context of the bit)...and then he'd be labeled a racist bigoted Donald Trumpist by the court of public opinion

Nobody would book him and like you said he'd be forced into retiring

o ya and Cuomo would institute a travel ban to his shows..

blame for what ? saying something ? I'm 44 and went to school with Gay folks and when the term that Shaw used was said and it was said a lot because that's what people called other people sometimes, even the Gay folks would laugh at it. Sometimes you just have to be blessed that you and your loved ones and friends are alive everyday and are healthy.

I have nothing against anyone or what they believe in or stand for but sometimes people overreact to certain things.

I saw George Carlin at Artpark about 12 years ago pretty near the end of his life. It was a good show, if a bit weird, and holy hell, some of those topics... If someone said that stuff today I shudder to think of the reaction from people.

I think there's a difference between those people saying it, since it's their job, compared to someone - anyone - yelling slurs at people in a desire to be degrading.

That said, I'm out on this topic, I spent the day on it in the Hawks thread.

I agree that people overreact. Including in this case, Shaw himself. Whether you like it or not times have changed and that stuff is deemed unacceptable now. My friends and I used to call each other that all the time, but, at a certain point it wasn't cool anymore and we moved on.

I think the one game suspension is a bit harsh, but given that the max fine is only $5,000 they really had no choice. And the players play for free in the playoffs, so he doesn't forfeit any celery so they had to add the bullpoop, tiny fine on top of it. The sensitivity training is laughable though. Like I said before it was worth probably $25K or $30K and that's it. Given not just the name calling but the gestures and inciting the stuff at the end of the game. He knows what's right and wrong. He was in the wrong. Abuse of officials is against the rules.

The edit definitely made it more clear, thanks.

I would think by time you're at the level of juniors and above, you've been playing hockey and have figured out that timing since you've been playing so long already at that point. As it is, passes are missed all the time no matter what side people play.

I appreciate folks chipping in with their background/input on this.

Everybody is too far right or too far left, nowadays.

When it comes to economics and finances, I lean right. Social issues, I lean left.

What Shaw said was wrong, but did not deserve a suspension. A fine, probably. The NHL is a business and needed to save face here with their "I can play too" promotion. And as I have already said what my stance is on social issues, I agree with you.
