I am left handed, played RW
better shooting angle
I always felt I had to use my backhand when parked down low playing LW - homiedclown
Yeah, that's the TLDR way of what I was getting at. |

I'm sure I'm going to sound dumb asking, but I'll explain my thinking on this...but why are RWers preferred to be right-handed?
I would think if you were left-handed and play on the RW that it gives you better angles to shoot at the net from, and also leaves your stick trailing the play which - while it may be an incorrect thought - would make it easier to accept a pass for a quick shot.
I'm left-handed when it comes to hockey (though right handed for writing and such), so if I envision myself on the ice, it "looks" awkward to me that I'd be placed on the left wing.
I see the advantage when rushing/carrying the puck up ice, but what % of the game is played that way as opposed to in-zone setting up and pass plays?
Also, defensively I'd think a forward would be best to have their stick in the middle of the ice.
Obviously these are long decided "rules" for positions, but having never played hockey outside of street hockey or in gym class, I don't have any education on why this is. - stashu Coming down the RW , Being R handed you keep the puck outside as the defender would be to the inside. |

It's the same with defensemen as well.
Generally the reason is bc you're better off using your forehand than your backhand, which makes it natural for u to be on your strong side.
U do see a lot of players set up on the off wing, esp on the PP, bc u have a better shooting angle

Yeah, I see that, makes a lot of sense, but you can still do that as a lefty. I guess I just wonder which part outweighs the others. I would think the shooting angle during zone-play might be better, but apparently not. |

Not sure, Its KHL website thats translated and they always make things sounds a bit off.
Website says that he was told changes are coming, so who knows what that means. Blow it up would be shocking but a big trade that they shouldnt make is somethign stupid they would do |

Just something dumb that they would do. Roy and Sakic keep on talking about matching up with the Kings, Blues, Sharks in being a big fast team.
I could see them moving a "smaller" Barrie for a bigger dman like Bogo or Trouba

I thought the Duchene rumors earlier this year were crazy.
I'm guessing after his season they wouldn't wanna move him now.
Landy can't be going anywhere, right?
There's no way they move MacKinnon...
I wonder what big changes they could actually make? |

Roy kept on talking a bout getting leadership help for Landy, saying his core guys need to step up sinec Landy cant do it all on his own. Sort of calling out Barrie, Dutch, EJ...Mack was hurt so he gets off of Roys rant.
Mack, EJ, and Landy wont be going anywhere....Duchene and Barrie shouldnt. But out of everything that was said this year, feels like Roy has thrown those 2 under the bus more often |

Ok... Gotcha
It's a fine line trying to get big enough to play against LA, Anaheim, StLouis...
And fast enough to play against Chicago & Dallas
I think San Jose & Nashville are kind of middle of the road teams in that respect
I think the AVs are set up better to be more like Chicago or Dallas |

A left handed shooting person playing right wing will be giving and accepting passes on the backhand unless they have their stick trailing behind them. They will also be accepting pucks that come around the boards on the backhand. And they can also keep the puck on their stick to the outside using their body to shield it. But, yeah, when it comes to shooting it's better to be inside.

I see Dutch as the man probably getting moved after the Roy incident. If he is talking about leadership you don't want that tension in the room.
But i will gladly take Barrie. |

Yep. This.
In NHL 16 i always play my defenders and wingers "opposite" of the "rules" easier for the one timers! |

Thanks to you and the rest of you who have answered this. Most are answers I could come up with when thinking about it, but hearing it from people who may know it as truth more than I do and possibly have a background in any remote form of organized hockey was helpful.
I guess it all boils down to the # and weight of the pros vs. cons. I really only see the 2 pros I mentioned (better shooting angles and defensive stick placement in your zone) compared to more cons.
The "weight" of the pros is kind of heavy though, as I think I'd be in favor of having better shot variety since a lot of hockey seems to be zone-play, but that leaves a lot of weakness in puck protection and retrieval. |

This is what I was thinking - this is the best way to play the wall on your forehand rather than your backhand. |
