It's not about being a "Darcy", it's about being great for a long period of time, and we can't do that in the future being handcuffed by Stamkos. Take a look at St.Louis, they locked up Tarasenko long term for 7.5. I'm not saying that we're going to get Tarasenko, but we can get a high end difference maker for a lot cheaper. Signing Stamkos doesn't buy us a cup. - bobmack13
I would advise anyone who has questions about the future impact of Stamkos on our ability to maintain a contending team in the future to do the analysis themselves...
Go to Generalfanager.com and copy the Sabres contracts into Excel (or someother spreadsheet) and play with the numbers
- their database includes when the contract expires...so, you can add in your assumptions on a new contract for said player...and add new players for that matter as well (draft picks, trades, UFA's)
When I did this about a month ago, it convinced me that we would be ok with Stamkos at $11M per for 7 years. I think the biggest issue was I had to assume that E. Kane was not resigned when his contract expired...but I felt comfortable that we could replace him with existing prospects and new draft picks.
Morale of the sotry -I turned into an advocate of pursuing Stamkos!

If you draft well, Stamkos won't hurt you. If you have to rely on paying UFA's to fill out your roster year after year, you're in trouble
if you get stamkos, big if
you get at least 1 top 4 d man this off season
what are your deadline needs going to be when you contend?
assuming no major injuries, bottom tier players that will allow you to keep your better draft picks
something else the hawks had to move in recent years - homiedclown
I think this is why we have to keep these picks over the next two seasons. If we can get a few more younger, top 9 or bottom 6 guys even, we will have those replacements coming up the ranks on time.
