Imagine how frustrating it must be for JB trying to trade vets.
Kesler gives a list of 2 teams,,, only 1 interested and it's in our division. No negotiating leverage.
Beiksa wanted a west coast team... SJ doubled back on Jim. Off to the Ducks he goes... same division. No negotiating leverage.
Hamhuis list left Jim nothing to work with. He passed on the 3rd rounders being offered at the last minute.

edit: then there is Vrbada who deliberately complicated his list so he would unlikely be traded. - boonerbuck

Five year stop gap? - VANTEL
Drafting and developing takes years Vantel. Look at Tavares, he's 25 years old & is just now leading his club into the second round. He's been in the league for seven years.
Sutter is a good serviceable middling center, he's a veteran, he'll help the younger players but he's far from a difference maker. |

Benning has come out and called Sutter part of the future core, never once did he use the term stop gap.
I can't begin to tell you how stupid it would be to give a stop gap a five year contract.
It is not hard to notice the difference of how the team looked Lefty, when Sutter played as opposed to when he didn't. |

If he's relying on Sutter caliber players to win, it's gonna be a long time before they win a Cup. The Canucks need way better players than him, he's been good and helps the team be better, but come on, his career high is 40 (frank)in points.
He helps the PK, he allows the young guys like Bo to develop at a measured pace, but he's not gonna win you any Cups. He will bring you closer to the Wildcard spot though.
The Nucks need a replacement for Hank, Auston Matthews, they need Bo to continue to develop into a good second line center.
Sutter helps the team be more competitive but he's not a future top six center on a winning Canucks team. |

I also don't know how you can be sure he won't be top 6 when over the last 15 years we have had Burrows Hansen Higgins Carter Booth and lesser players employed steadily in our top 6 |

Perhaps he has, but I maintain Brandon Sutter is here until more skilled players come to grab those top two center spots. When he's back as a third line center/special teams guy, that's when you've made the next step to becoming a better team. |

When the Canucks had Henrik in his prime and Kesler behind him, they were one of the best in the league, too bad they never had another scoring winger besides Daniel or they'd have probably won a Cup.
Kesler had more goals one year than Sutter had points in his career year. You've gotta, just gotta, have a 1/2 center punch to win in the playoffs. |

Do you think waiting 45 years is impatient?
What's wrong with wanting your team to be better than they are? Do we as fans just say "oh well, next year". Or do we use the only means we have as fans to voice our displeasure with the way the franchise is run; by female doging and moaning to the media.
Media picks up on that displeasure and runs with it to sell their words. Makes sense. Got to pay the bills.
If fans stop going to the games the fanbase is labeled fickle. Can you suggest other ways for fans to tell management that they ain't happy with the product that doesn't make them impatient or fickle? |

I'm not sure where this is leading, from a Sutter conversation, but in 2011 this was their top six.
Dany Hank Burrows
Raymond Kesler Samuelsson
Therein lies the problem, no mentionable secondary scoring on that second line, Kesler got a lot of his on special teams but they needed more scoring and skill to play with Kesler. |

I like Sutter, but he's not a top six center on a good team. I want them to be a good team again. Sutter as a third line center means they've got two better centers, that's when they're in good shape.
Matthews

Sutter
Unless he plays wing, then I could see him in the top six. |

Half the fans in this City are screaming to fire Benning after 23 months on the job! That's not impatient the 43 years before are not Benning and Lindens fault. Patient fans are able to embrace and support a rebuild. Do you see our fans doing that? |

I guess what I'm saying is I don't want a competitive team, I want a Cup challenging team. They're down at the bottom, draft well and see where you're at next year. |

Just because he isn't a top 6 on a contending team doesn't mean his can't be a valuable part of the core. A guy that can play the PK, defend, take faceoffs, skate like the wind, play a heavy game and out up 40 points is pretty valuable in my books. Regardless of what label you want to put on him |

Hopefully Benning can either win the lotto, or, find a gem like Kopitar 10th, Jeff Carter 11th, Ryan Getzlaf 19th, Nicklas Backstrom 4th, Claude Giroux 22nd, Lgan Couture 9th, Erik Karlsson 15th, OEL 6th, Kuznetsov 26th, Ryan Johansen 4th, Filipino Forsberg 11th, etc. etc. |

I don't believe we will be a bottom 10 team next year. A healthy team and subtracting the bad and bringing in new will fix a lot of problems |

Yup fair enough, for me when I think core of players I'm thinking of the five or six main pieces of a Championship team. That wouldn't be what you just described above when you're talking about a center. |

45 years of nothing and the franchise is still in Vancouver. Must be something that keeps this poopfire train running.
Let's agree to keep JB out of this. It’s exhausting. Nobody here has criticized JB at this point of the conversation. Every GM has got the same treatment from this market. Even Quinn.
