Can we just get him playing full time 1st? - mdw7413
As we discussed yesterday, playing progression is linear. McIlrath's game improved 200% year over year, therefore he will improve 200% each year for the next 8 years.
He will likely be the NHL's first defenseman to score 400 points. |

General Fanager
@generalfanager
51 players currently have NMCs that would have to be protected for a possible 2017-18 expansion draft. Full list:
http://www.generalfanager...m/clauses?clauseyear=2017
this is wrong, nevermind this list, I know Stepan doesn't have one
http://www.nydailynews.co...on-deal-article-1.2305283
Stepan said the contract includes a full no-trade clause in years three and four and a 15-team limited no-trade clause for years five and six. He is not eligible for a no-trade clause in years one and two, which would have been restricted free agency years. - jimbro83
There's no doubt only MStaal, G and Henrik got NMC's going forward... Agree? |

As much of a pain in the ass as this cap stuff is, it does add parity to the league...outside of the poopshow that is the Oilers front office.
...and the Snow/Wang era...that was quality entertainment.

I was just thinking that this NMC expansion rule not only should guarantee a buyout of Girardi, but maybe even Marc Staal.
They can't be forced to protect Marc Staal and leave someone better exposed IMO |

But on the flip side a team that purposely pays someone who will never play again should have it count. - mdw7413
Can't buy out an injured player. Devils have no options, he is there until the contract runs out. |

If the Rangers were to buy Staal out another team can sign him for significantly less. |

You know what, reading that, it seems teams can ask players to waive NMCs before the draft. No one is taking Staal or Clowe Or Girardi, so I think some teams would be in the clear. They only use the term "involuntary relocation" |

Can a player be bought out that plays like he's injured?

the rules seem to be if a player has a NMC the team is required to protect them in the expansion draft, you only get a limited number of players to protect
so, the Rangers could be in a position where they have to protect Dan Girardi and Marc Staal while leaving a significant player exposed because they run out of protected slots |

If the Rangers took the option where you protect 7F, 3D, and 1G...they'd have to burn two protected defenseman slots on 5/18. You'd have to figure the other would be used on McDonagh...leaving Skjei, McIlrath and Klein exposed.
They could go the 8 skaters and 1 goalie route too. Regardless, if I'm Gorton I'd be begging Dolan for permission to buy out Girardi and begging Staal to accept a trade to one of his brother's teams. |

the weird thing is that Girardi turns into a NTC on July 1st, 2017, so another factor is exactly when an expansion draft would be held, would it be before the draft? after July 1? |
